I.

A. Translate: Ὁ δὲ ταῦτα ὑπισχνεῖτο καὶ φιλοφρονούμενος οἶνον ἔφρασεν ἔνθα ἦν κατορωρυγμένος. Ταύτην μὲν οὖν τὴν νύκτα διασκηνήσαντες οὕτως διεκοιμήθησαν ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἀφθόνοις πάντες οἱ στρατιῶται, ἐν φυλακῇ ἔχοντες τὸν κωμάρχην καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτοῦ ὁμοῦ ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς. Τῇ δ' ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ Ξενοφῶν λαβὼν τὸν κωμάρχην πρὸς Χειρίσοφον ἐπορεύετο· ὅπου δὲ παρίοι κώμην, ἐτρέπετο πρὸς τοὺς ἐν ταῖς κώμαις καὶ κατελάμβανε πανταχοῦ εὐωχουμένους καὶ εὐθυμουμένους· καὶ οὐδαμόθεν ἀφίεσαν πρὶν παραθεῖναι αὐτοῖς ἄριστον· οὐκ ἦν δ ̓ ὅπου οὐ παρετίθεσαν ἐπὶ τὴν αὐτὴν τράπεζαν κρέα άρνεια, ἐρίφεια, χοίρεια, μόσχεια, ὀρνίθεια, σὺν πολλοῖς ἄρτοις τοῖς μὲν πυρίνοις τοῖς δὲ κριθίνοις. Οπότε δέ τις φιλοφρονούμενος τῳ βούλοιτο προπιεῖν, εἷλκεν ἐπὶ τὸν κρατῆρα· ἔνθεν ἐπικύψαντα ἔδει ροφοῦντα πιεῖν ὥσπερ βοῦν. Καὶ τῷ κωμάρχῃ ἐδίδοσαν λαμβάνειν ὅτι βούλοιτο.

1. Οἶνον ἔφρασεν ένθα ἦν κατορωρυγμένος. Explain the syntax. What form might be used for v and participle? What is the difference in meaning?

2. Τῇ ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ. How is this otherwise expressed? What are the Latin equivalents?

3. Ενθεν ἐπικύψαντα ἔδει πιεῖν ὥσπερ βοῦν. Explain the syntax.

4. What conjunctions are followed by the infinitive?

5. Write the usual form of the noun from which each of the adjectives in the extract is derived.

Translate: Εστησαν ἀνὰ ἑκατὸν μάλιστα ὥσπερ χοροὶ ἀντιστοιχοῦντες ἀλλήλοις, ἔχοντες γέρρα πάντες λευκῶν βοῶν δασέα, εἰκασμένα κιττοῦ πετάλῳ. ἐν δὲ τῇ δεξιᾷ παλτὸν ὡς ἑξάπηχυ, ἐμροσθεν μὲν λόγχην ἔχον, ὄπισθεν δὲ αὐτοῦ τοῦ ξύλου σφαιροειδές. Ἐντεῦθεν ἐξῆρχε μὲν αὐτῶν εἰς, οἱ δ' ἄλλοι πάντες ᾄδοντες ἐπορεύοντο ἐν ρυθμῳ καὶ διελθόντες διά τῶν τάξεων καὶ διὰ τῶν ὅπλων τῶν Ἑλληνικῶν ἐπορεύοντο εὐθὺς πρὸς τοὺς πολεμίους ἐπὶ χωρίον ὃ ἐδόκει ἐπιμαχώτατον εἶναι. Ωικεῖτο πρὸ τῆς πόλεως τῆς μητροπόλεως καλουμένης αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐχούσης τὸ ἀκρότατον τῶν Μοσσυνοίκων.

1. Decline in combination in the singular (showing contractions) λινοῦ στωματοδέσμου: λευκῶν βοῶν: σαγάρεις σιδηρᾶς.

He said he would return next day from the country with his daughters, and spend the rest of his life in the city as cheerfully as possible.

GEOMETRY.

TIME: THREE HOURS.

1. Enuntiate the axiom you employ in proving the three main properties of parallel straight lines: and thereafter prove them.

2. "If a straight line be bisected and produced to any point, the rectangle of the whole line thus produced and the part produced, etc. Complete the enuntiation, prove the proposition, and give its Algebraic representation, or equivalent.

2. On a given straight line, describe a segment of a circle containing an angle equal to a given angle.

4. If a and b units respectively are the lengths of the adjacent sides of a rectangle, find the area geometrically. Hence also deduce a rule for finding the area of a trapezoid.

5. Chords of a circle are so divided that the rectangles of their segments are all equal: find the locus of the points of section of the chords.

6. Make a right-angled triangle equal to the difference of two scalene triangles, on a given base. (To be done without the use of any parallelogram.)

7. BAC is a fixed angle. The extremities of D E, a line of given length, are in A B and A C respectively, and D E is pushed into its various possible positions, Find when the triangle D A E is a maximum.

ARITHMETIC AND ALGEBRA.

TIME: THREE HOURS.

1. By investing in 33 p.c. stock a person got 4 p. c. for his money; how many shares (nominal value each, $100) could he purchase for $14.000?

2. From a full jar of nitric acid containing 256 pints, 64 pints are drawn off and the jar is filled with water. The now full jar is treated in the same manner: and the process is repeated 5 tlmes in all. How much acid now remains in the mixture?
