MACAULAY'S ESSAYS ON BACON, BURLEIGH, HAMPDEN AND MILTON.

TIME: TWO HOURS.

1. Give the general characteristics of Macaulay's style, illustrating in particular his use of illusion, metaphor, simile, antithesis, and other figures of speech.

2. Judging from style alone, which of the following sentences would you hold to be Macaulay's? and on what grounds?—

(1.) They are such as none but a great genius could have thought of, though upon the perusal of them, they seem to rise of themselves from the subject of which he treats. (2.) He was not the maker of that road; he was not the discoverer of that road; he was not the person who first surveyed and mapped that road. But he was the person who first called the public attention to an inexhaustible mine of wealth, which has been utterly neglected, and which was accessible by that road alone.

(3.) Then he kissed her for the last time, and that kiss was so sweet he must needs kiss her again: and he wept, but he said they were cruel tears.

(4.) Yet in the being and in the working of a faithful man is there already a something that pertains not to this wild death-element of time; that triumphs over time, and is, and will be, when time shall be no more.

(5.) An acre in Middlesex is better than a principality in Utopia. The smallest actual good is better than the most magnificent promises of impossibilities.

(6.) There were many things which they loved better than virtue, and which they feared more than guilt.

(7.) Others might possess the qualities which were necessary
to save the popular party in the crisis of danger; he
alone had both the power and the inclination to restrain
its excesses in the hour of triumph.

(8.) But, if we must make our choice, we shall, like Bassanio
in the play, turn from the specious caskets which con-
tain only the Death's head and the Fool's head, and fix on
the plain leaden chest which conceals the treasure.
(9.) The principles of liberty were the scoff of every grinning
courtier and the Anathema Maranatha of every fawning
dean.

3. Write a passage of two sentences, one long and the other short, on any subject you choose, in imitation of Macaulay; and then express the same ideas in the style of Bacon.

4. Give Macaulay's criticism of Mr. Montagu's defence of Bacon against the charge of corruption.

5. Describe Macaulay's method of exposition, as illustrated in the passage on the superiority of the Baconian to the Platonic philosophy.

6.

“There is, we think, only one solution of the phenomena which we findin the history and in the drama of that age," (Burleigh's)? What are “the phenomena ?” and what “the solution ?”

7. Characterize Macaulay's method of describing men and things, and summarize his description of any two of the following:-James I., Charles I., Laud, Strafford, Hampden.

8. Reproduce, as nearly as possible in the author's words, Macaulay's contrast either of Milton with Dante, or of the Puritans with the Royalists.

9. Quote a few sentences from two or three of the more eloquent passages of the essays, which you may have thought worth committing to memory.

A. Translate: CATAPLUS, beginning at, ΚΛΩΘ. Παῖσαι ἀπειλῶν· ἀλλ' ἔμβηθι· ending at ΜΕΓ. "Οτι, νὴ Δία, τύραννος ἦν καὶ δορυφόρους εἶχον μυρίους.

1. Τὸ δὲ νῦν ἔχον, μὴ διάτριβε. Εxplain the construction ofτὸ δὲ νῦν ἔχον.

2. σύρετ ̓ ἀυτὸν εἴσω του ποδός. Account for the case of ποδός.

3. καὶ ὅπως ἀσφαλῶς ἀμέλει πρὸς τὸν ἱστὸν δεδήσεται. Supply the ellipsis, and explain the orignal signification of ἀμέλει.

4, Give the meaning and derivation of: σκυτοτόμος, συκοφάνται, ἑρμογλυφέα, χειρώναξ, ἀκρόδρυα, βουλυτόν, κληρονόμος, ἐρραψώδεις, αιπόλιον. 5. Παῦσαι ἀπειλών. Turn this into Latin.

B. Translate: MENIPPUS, beginning at MΕΝ. Ὁ μὲν Σωκράτης κἀκεῖ περιέρχεται ending at οὐ γὰρ οἶδ' ὅπως, περὶ τούτου λέγειν προθέμενος, πάμπολυ ἀπεπλανήθην του λόγου.

1. καὶ ἔι τις ἄλλος λάλος νεκρός. Supply the ellipsis.

2. Account for the cases of αὐτῶ, (after ἐπεφύσητο) φωνῇ, ὅπερ, λόγου. 3. Parse the following verbal forms, giving the chief parts found : διελέγχων, ἐπεφύσητο, διῳδήκει, γελᾷ, προύθεσαν.

4. Αλλου τοίνυν ἄλλην ἐπαινοῦντος, ὡς ἕκαστος γνώμης ἢ ἐμπειρίας εἶχεν, ὁ πατὴρ εἰς τὸν θεῖον ἀπιδὼν, οὐ θέμις, εἶπεν, ἄλλην τεχνην ἐπικρατεῖν, σοῦ παρόντος. Translate, and account for the case of γνώμης. Quote one other example of a similar genitive.

5. Give Latin equivalents for,—"Αμα τε—καί; Αρχὴ δέ τοι ἥμισυ παντός; "Αλλου τοινυν ἄλλην ἐπαινοῦντος.

II.

1. Give the meaning, mark the gender, and write the nom. and gen. sing. of:-τραυματίαι, κλωθοῖ, κωπῶν, ἔσπληγγος, ὦτα, ἐφήβων, ἀνδρίαντες, ἰδιωτῶν, πλοῦν.

2. Write in the other degrees of comparison all the forms corresponding to each of the following:—ταχεῖαν, πτωχοί, πενήτων, μέγιστον, πλείω.

3. Write the demonstrative, relative, and correlative pronouns, distinguishing their meanings.

4. What varieties of Reduplication have you met?

two examples of each.

5. (α.) Give the contracted forms of the following:—ποιέοιεν, σπάοιο, εἴαε, ὁραούσης, πλέετε, ἐψάετε.

(6.) Resolve : ἐνίοτε, κάγω, κἀκεῖνα, κᾆτα, κἄν, κάν.

6. Distinguish between ἔφυν, ἔφυσα; ἅπτω, ἅπτομαι; ἔβην, ἔβησα ; ἔστην, ἵστην ; χράω, χρῶμαι.

7. In what way would you classify verbs in-μι?

8. State the rule for the formation of the 2nd perf. of mute verbs. Exemplify by means of the following,πείθω, τρέφω, κράζω, φεύγω, φρίσσω.

(b)

the first aorists in all voices of ἴημι, νέμω, βαστάζω.
the perfects act. of δάκνω, τείνω, ὄμνυμι.

(c.) the perfects pass of ὠθέω, πίμπλημι, τελέω.
(d.) the second perfects of κτείνω, δείδω, ἔλπομαι.
(e.) the futures of πάσχω, μανθάνω, τρέφω.

XENOPHON: CYROPAEDIA, BOOK I.

TIME: Two HOURS.

I.

A. Translate: Cyro : I. 3, §§ 13, 14 to πορεύσει.

1. ἡ δὲ ἀπεκρίνατο ότι βούλοιτο κ. τ. λ. Note the change of construction in this sentence.

2. χάριν σοι εἴσομαι. Give the Latin phrase.

ἔπειτα δὲ ἐν τῷ δείπνῳ ἐπὶ τὸ μετρίως σοι δοκοῦν ἔχειν ὁποίαν βούλει ὁδὸν πορεύσει. Why does Astyages say this? Explain the construction of the phrase ἐπὶ τὸ μετρίως σοι δοκοῦν ἔχειν. Parse πορεύσει.

Distinguish the meanings of παρά with cases.

B. Translate: Cyro. I, 6 §§ 27, 28 beginning, καὶ ὁ κῦρος ἐπιγελάσας εἶπεν, ending, ἐπειρᾶσθε ἀγωνίζεσθαι πρὸς αὐτά ;

HOMER: ODYSSEY, BOOK IX. XENOPHON: MEMORABILIA, BOOK I.

TIME: THREE HOURS.

I.

A. Translate: Od. IX; vv. 447-465.

1. Comment on the use of πεφυγμένον εἶναι, θεινομένου, ἐλθόντες.

What forms in Attic corresponds to θείω, κε, ποτί, αἰεὶ, ἔοκε, ῆμος, ἅμμες, ηύς, εἰμέν, ἔδμεναι,

7. What towns claimed to be the birth-place of Homer? What date is given to him by Herodotus? On what grounds is the Odyssey considered not to be the work of the writer of the Iliad?

B. Translate:-Memor. I, ch. 2, §§ 52, 53, 54, to polòv Tivεív.

1. ὡς οὐδὲν ὄφελος εὔνους εἶναι. Analyze this clause, and parse ὄφελος, εὔνους.

2. ὥστε μηδαμοῦ παρ' αὐτοῖς τοὺς ἄλλους εἶναι πρὸς ἑαυτόν. Parse μηδαμοῦ. Is any other construction admissible with ὥστε. Turn this clause into Latin.

3. Τὴν ταχίστην ἐξενέγκαντες ἀφανίζουσιν. Give other accusatives used like τὴν ταχίστην,

5. ἐγὼ μάλιστα τεθαύμακα.... ἐπὶ δὲ τραγωδία Σοφοκλέα, ἐπὶ δὲ ζωγραφίᾳ Ζεύξιν. Give the principal parts of: τεθαύμακα. Ζοφοκλέα, Where was Ζυξις born, and when did he fourish?

6. What verbs regularly govern two accusatives ?

7. What cases are used with views of (α) hearing, (b) seeing, (c) tasting ?

8. What adverbs take (a) the genitive, (b) the dative?

9. Turn into Greek: How many eggs shall I be able to buy in the market for three shillings? I shall go home by the same road, and on the same day as you. Some of the pupils who were prudent listened to their teacher when he spoke about Homer's poems, the imprudent neglected this. What do you think will be the result? By what arguments did his accusers persuade the Athenians that Socrates deserved to die?

DEMOSTHENES: OLYNTHIACS.

TIME: TWO AND A HALF HOURS.

I.

A. Translate: Oc. I, §§ 1, 3, beginning ὁμὲν οὖν παρὼν καιρὸς, ὦἄνδρες Αθηναῖοι, ending παρασπάσηταί τι τῶν ὅλων πραγμάτων.

1. Ὁ μὲν οὖν παρών καιρός. Write an historical note.

2. μόνον οὐχὶ. Distinguish this from οὐ μόνον.

3. ὅτι τῶν πραγμάτων κ. τ. λ. Account for all cases in this clause. 4. ἡμεῖς δ ̓ οὐκ οἶδα ὅντινά μοι δοκοῦμεν ἔχειν τρόπον πρὸς αὐτά. Explain the construction and give the Latin.

5. ψηφίσασθαι. What is the meaning of the active voice ?

6. ὅπως ἐνθένδε καὶ βοηθήσετε καὶ μὴ πάθητε. Account for moods. 7. ἔστι. When is it so accentuated? άνθρωπος. Write the gen. sing. B. Translate: OL. II. §§ 14, 15, beginning at, "Ολως μὲν γὰρ ἡ Μακεδο ονικη δύναμις καὶ ἀρχὴ ending δόξαν ἀντὶ τοῦ ζῆν ἀσφαλῶς ἡρημένος.

1. πρὸς Ολυνθίους, πρὸς Ποτίδαιαν. Describe the geographical situation of the places.

2. νυνὶ δὲ Θετταλοῖς στασιάζουσι καὶ τεταραγμένοις ἐπὶ τὴν τυραννικὴν οἰκίαν ἐβοήθησε. What does he refer to ?

3. πάντ' ὠφελεῖ. What is the constuction ?

4. Parse: κατασκευάσαι, εξελήλεγκται, προπέποται.
