LONGMANS' ELEMENTARY ALGEBRA.

By W. S. BEARD, B.A., Mathematical School, Rochester. Crown 8vo. 163 pages. 50 cents. With Answers. 219 pages. 60 cents.

MILWAUKEE ACADEMY.

“For elementary work in algebra I have seen nothing equal to Longmans' Elementary Algebra."-J. HOWARD PRATT, Milwaukee, Wis.

CAMBRIDGE ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL.

"This algebra impresses me as a very skilfully prepared work-rich in its methods and explanations, in its devices to awaken thought in the right direction, and particularly rich in its examples for practice and drill. It seems too to be very carefully graded. I do not see how one can fail to understand the elements of algebra if he is held up to the plan of this book.

LONGMANS, GREEN, & CO., 91-93 Fifth Avenue, New York

By RICHARD A. PROCTOR. 8vo, 406 pages. $1.25.

The purpose of this book is to provide paths of easy access to the knowledge of some of the more interesting discoveries, researches or inquiries of the science of the day. The aim throughout has been to interest rather than instruct in the strict sense of the word. The work has been carefully treated, and pains taken not to present as established truths such views as are for the present only matter of opinion. As will be seen from the list of contents the subjects dealt with cover rather a wide field, and are of necessity confined to the main facts only.

NICHOLS' ELEMENTARY GEOMETRY. Elementary and Constructional Geometry. By EDGAR H. NICHOLS, A.B., of the Browne & Nichols School, Cambridge, Mass. 12mo, 150 pages.

75 cents.

This is an elementary work newly prepared by the principal of the Browne & Nichols School, Cambridge, Mass., mainly with reference to the recommendations of the National Committee of Ten, and is designed for pupils beginning geometry at the age of twelve or even younger. It is based upon the author's class-room experience with young boys and is an attempt to supply a work in geometry adapted to grammar grades.

CLAY-MODELLING.

By MARY LOUISA HERMIONE UNWIN, Examiner in Clay-modelling to the Educational Handwork Union. A Manual of Clay-modelling for Teachers and Scholars. With 66 Illustrations and a Preface by T. G. Rooper, M.A. Balliol College, Oxford. 12mo. $1.00.

The course set forth in this Manual is suitable for children of six or seven years of age and upwards. It is a great advantage to young children to learn to handle the clay and to become accustomed to using it. They will be found greatly to enjoy its mere manipulation They may begin with the simplest objects, such as beads, round or flat, of different sizes; cherries with string or wicker stalks. A sausage, or cigar; a smail saucer, or a basket, made in the same way as Model No. II; bun, or an open pea-pod with loose peas in it made separately; a pat of butter, or a cottage loaf, are also suitable. For the work of advanced pupils, or for the higher classes in schools, more difficult subjects may be attempted.

THE HARPUR EUCLID. An Edition of Euclid's Elements revised in accordance with the Reports of the Cambridge Board of Mathematical Studies and the Oxford Board of the Faculty of Natural Science.

By E. M. LANGLEY, Senior Mathematical Master, the Modern School, Bedford, and W. S. PHILLIPS, M. A., Senior Mathematical Master at Bedford Grammar School. With numerous Notes, and nearly 1,000 Miscellaneous Exercises and Supplementary Propositions. Crown 8vo. Complete edition. Books I-VI and XI. (1–21).

524 pages. $1.50.

*See Longmans, Green, & Co.'s Catalogue of Educational Works for the Separate Editions of the Various Books.

An attempt has been made in the Notes and Miscellaneous Exercises to familiarise the student with such terms and ideas as he will be likely to meet with in his higher reading and in treatises on Elementary Geometry by other writers, and to indicate by difference of type important theorems and problems which should be well known to him, although not given among Euclid's propositions. At the same time the work is not intended to be a substitute for such works as Casey's well-known Sequel to Euclid, but to serve as an introduction to them.

The short treatise "On Quadrilaterals" will, it is hoped, be found interesting to those students who have mastered the previous exercises and useful to teachers in supplying a large number of easy and instructive exercises in a short compass. [Preface.]

MILWAUKEE ACADEMY.

Longmans' School Trigonometry exactly meets my idea of what an elementary Trigonometry should be. I like the prominence given to purely mathematical reasoning and the relegation of the solution of triangles to its proper place."-J. HOWARD PRATT, Milwaukee, Wis.

CASE SCHOOL OF APPLIED SCIENCE.

"It seems to be very complete, and to abound in well-arranged examples." -Professor CHAS. S. HOWE, Cleveland, O.

"One of the most admirable text-books we have ever seen. While it is eminently fitted to its title, the title is in no way fitted to express the higher merits of the book, which is alike suited for use in the class-room and as a reference book for the engineer. There is a fulness, neatness, precision, and finish in all the details that renders it worthy of the highest praise.”—Nation.
