GOD IS EVERYWHERE.

5. Does He not also know every thing that we think and feel?

"Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart." 1 Samuel xvi. 7.

6.

My thoughts, before they are my own,
Are to my God distinctly known;
He knows the words I mean to speak,
Ere from my opening lips they break.

Within Thy circling power I stand;
On every
side I find Thy hand:
Awake, asleep, at home, abroad,

I am surrounded still with God.

7. Can our most secret actions always remain coucealed?

"For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it he evil." Ecclesiastes xii. 14.

x. 29-31.

9.

That God's own eye is fixed on me.

LESSON XV.

"THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD."

My Shepherd is the living Lord;

In pastures fair, with waters calm,

He sets me forth to feed.

6. In what words does our Lord Jesus Christ speak of Himself as a Shepherd? St. John x. 11, 14.

7. How is the Shepherd's call to the sheep described? "The sheep hear His voice; and He calleth His own sheep by name, and leadeth them out." St. John x. 3.

8. Jesus is our Shepherd, wiping every tear;
Folded in His bosom, what have we to fear?
Only let us follow whither He doth lead,
To the thirsty desert or the dewy mead.

[blocks in formation]

Jesus is our Shepherd: well we know His voice;
How the gentlest whisper makes our heart rejoice!
Even when it chideth, tender in its tone.

None but He shall guide us: we are His alone.

Jesus is our Shepherd: with His goodness now
And His tender mercy He doth us endow !
Let us sing His praises with a gladsome heart,
Till in heaven we meet Him, never more to part

The Lord is my Shepherd, no want shall I know;
I feed in green pastures, safe folded I rest :
He leadeth my soul where the still waters flow,

Restores me when wandering, redeems when oppressed.

Through the valley and shadow of death though I stray,
Since Thou art my guardian, no evil I fear:

Thy rod shall defend me, Thy staff be my stay;
No harm can befall with my Comforter near.

In the midst of affliction my table is spread;
With blessings unmeasured my cup runneth o'er ;
With perfume and oil Thou anointest my head:
Oh! what shall I ask of Thy providence more?

Let goodness and mercy, my bountiful God,
Still follow my steps till I meet Thee above:

I seek, by the path which my forefathers trod

Through the land of their sojourn, Thy kingdom of love.
