The statement on page 390, that manuscripts of the Gospels written in the age of the first Christian Emperor are even now extant, is perhaps made with too little qualification. It is true that some critics ascribe both the Alexandrine and the Vatican manuscripts of the Gospels to the fourth cen tury, in the early part of which Constantine flourished.
