L. M. 1 PRAISE ye the Lord: 'tis good to raise Our hearts and voices in His praise: His nature and His works invite To make this duty our delight.
2 The Lord builds up Jerusalem, And gathers nations to His Name: His mercy melts the stubborn soul, And makes the broken spirit whole.
3 Great is our Lord, and great His might, And all His glories infinite;
He crowns the meek, rewards the just, And treads the wicked to the dust.
4 His saints are lovely in His sight; He views His children with delight; He sees their hope, He knows their fear, And finds and loves His image there.
1 LONG as I live, I'll bless Thy Name, God of eternal love!
My work and joy shall be the same, In the bright world above.
2 Great is the Lord, His power unknown, And let His praise be great:
I'll sing the honors of Thy throne, Thy works of grace repeat.
3 Thy grace shall dwell upon my tongue; And while my lips rejoice,
The men that hear my sacred song Shall join their cheerful voice.
4 Fathers to sons shall teach Thy Name, And children learn Thy ways; Ages to come Thy truth proclaim, And nations sound Thy praise.
5 Thy glorious deeds of ancient date Shall through the world be known: Thine arm of power, Thy heavenly state, With public splendor shown.
6 The world is managed by Thy hands, Thy saints are ruled by love; And Thine eternal kingdom stands, Though rocks and hills remove.
1 My God, my King, Thy various praise Shall fill the remnant of my days: Thy grace employ my humble tongue Till death and glory raise the song.
2 The wings of every hour shall bear Some thankful tribute to Thine ear; And every setting sun shall see New works of duty done for Thee.
3 But who can speak Thy wondrous deeds? Thy greatness all our thoughts exceeds. Vast and unsearchable Thy ways, Vast and immortal be Thy praise.
1 THEE we adore, eternal Lord! We praise Thy Name with one accord: Thy saints, who here Thy goodness see, Through all the world do worship Thee.
2 To Thee aloud all angels cry, The heavens and all the powers on high; Thee, holy, holy, holy King,
Lord God of hosts, they ever sing.
3 The apostles join the glorious throng; The prophets swell the immortal song; Thy martyrs' noble army raise Eternal anthems to Thy praise.
4 From day to day, O Lord, do we Highly exalt and honor Thee! Thy Name we worship and adore, World without end, for evermore! 5 Vouchsafe, O Lord, we humbly pray, To keep us safe from sin this day; Have mercy, Lord! we trust in Thee; Oh, let us ne'er confounded be!
From Thomas Cotterill. 1810.
Now thank we all our God, With grateful hearts and voices,
Who wondrous things hath done, In whom His earth rejoices; Who from our mother's arms Hath blessed us on our way With countless gifts of love, And still is ours to-day.
O may this bounteous God Through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts And blessed peace to cheer us; And keep us in His grace, And guide us when perplexed,
And free us from all ills,
In this world and the next.
All praise and thanks to God The Father, now be given,
The Son, and Him who reigns With Them in highest heaven; The One eternal God,
Whom earth and heaven adore; For thus it was, is now,
And shall be evermore!
Catherine Winkworth. 1858. a. Tr. Martin Rinckart. 1636.
1 HOLY, holy, holy Lord! Be Thy glorious Name adored. Lord, Thy mercies never fail: Hail, celestial Goodness, hail!
2 Though unworthy, Lord, Thine ear, Deign our humble songs to hear. Purer praise we hope to bring, When around Thy throne we sing.
3 There no tongue shall silent be; All shall join in harmony;
That through heaven's capacious round Praise to Thee may ever sound.
Lord, Thy mercies never fail : Hail, celestial Goodness, hail! Holy, holy, holy Lord!
Be Thy glorious Name adored.
1 SONGS of praise the angels sang, Heaven with hallelujahs rang, When Jehovah's work begun, When He spake, and it was done.
2 Songs of praise awoke the morn, When the Prince of Peace was born; Songs of praise arose, when He Captive led captivity.
3 Heaven and earth must pass away; Songs of praise shall crown that day: God will make new heavens and earth; Songs of praise shall hail their birth. 4 And shall man alone be dumb, Till that glorious kingdom come? No;-the Church delights to raise Psalms, and hymns, and songs of praise. 5 Saints below, with heart and voice, Still in songs of praise rejoice; Learning here, by faith and love, Songs of praise to sing above.
6 Borne upon their latest breath, Songs of praise shall conquer death; Then, amidst eternal joy,
Songs of praise their powers employ. James Montgomery. 1825.
1 MIGHTY God, while angels bless Thee, May a mortal lisp Thy Name? Lord of men, as well as angels, Thou art every creature's theme. 2 Lord of every land and nation, Ancient of eternal days! Sounded through the wide creation Be Thy just and lawful praise.
3 For the grandeur of Thy nature, Grand beyond a seraph's thought;
For created works of power,
Works with skill and kindness wrought:
