5. Explain the words in italics in the following

sentences:

"Milton wrote blank verse."

"Most poets express their thoughts in rhyme."
"There is neither rhyme nor reason in that."
"His poetry is metrical."

"His poetry is alliterative."
"His poetry is rhythmical."

6. Enumerate and explain the words of Greek and Latin origin in the following passage:

"For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of

sorrows.

"But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

"And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

"But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost."

7. Re-write the following passage into modern English, taking care to correct the faults of spelling in the original:

"Vpon thes and other articles of ye like nature we became possesed of ye Citty of Leile; and at ye 6 days end wee began to repayre and make up ye breaches that ware made on ye walls and works of ye toune, and likewise raise Bateries and sinck trenches against ye Cittadell. What number of ye Enemy is in the Cittadell wth Marshall de Boufflers

is not yett exactly knowne; but are judged to be about 5 thousand, and are sayd to be well stocked wth provissions and amunition and all nessesaryes requissite as they thinke for to hold out upon occation for 10 weeks longer: if they are not mistaken :-however our Batteries being fixed and every thing in good order it is expected they will beginn to fire upon ye Cittadell by Munday ye 25th of October; soe that if not surrendered before that time they must take what follows."

8. What do you understand by an irregular verb? Give an example of such a verb and conjugate it.
