Κέκλιτ ̓ ἀποιχομένα φιλίω τιν ἐφ ̓ ἦτορι ψυχα,
Οὔτις ἀδακρυτὶ φίλω ἀνέρος ὄσσε κάλυψεν
Γᾶς ὑπένερθε φύσις τὴν φωνὴν ἧκεν ἀραιὰν,
Κ ̓ ἄμμιν ὑποσποδίοις τὸ πρὶν πῦρ ἐνδοῖ ἐναίθει,

Pectore dilecto forsan suffulta recumbit

Ægra anima, atque alas, jam tremebunda, movet ; Adsint et lacrymæ, "nostri pars optima sensûs," Dum sacro cineres excitat igne Deus.

Ein Auge, das sich schließt, ein halbgebrochnes Herz
Heischt eine Thråne doch und eines Freundes Schmerz ;
Es rufet noch Natur aus unsrer Gruft; es lodert
Ihr Feuer unverlöscht, wenn unsre Usche modert.

Posa, spirando, in grembo amico e fido
L'alma, e chiede di pianto alcuna stilla.
Da la tomba anco alza Natura il grido,
E sotto il cener freddo amor sfavilla.

Nature, chez les morts ta voix se fait entendre ;
Ta flamme dans la tombe anime notre cendre ;
Aux portes du néant respirant l'avenir,

Nous voulons nous survivre en un doux souvenir.
