III. Man, by his fall into a state of fin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any fpiritual good accompanying falvation ɗ: fo as a natural man, being altogether averfe from that good e, and dead in fin f, is not able, by his own ftrength, to convert himfelf, or to prepare himself thereunto g.

IV. When God converts a finner, and tranflates him into the ftate of grace, he freeth him from his natural bondage under fin b, and by his grace alone enables him freely to will and to do that

III. d Rom. v. 6. For when we were yet without ftrength, in due time Chrift died for the ungodly. Rom. viii. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not fubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. John xv. 5. I am the vine, ye are the branches; He that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually difcerned. Tit. iii. 3. For we ourfelves alfo were fometimes foolish, difobedient, deceived, ferving divers lufts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. v. 4. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards man appeared, v. 5. Not by works of righteoufoefs which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us by the wathing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghoft.

IV. Col. i. 13. Who hath delivered us from the power of darknefs, and hath tranflated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. John viii. 34. Jefus anfwered them, Verily, verily, I fay unto you, whofoever

that which is fpiritually good i; yet so as that, by reafon of his remaining corruption, he doth not perfectly nor only will that which is good, but doth alfo will that which is evil k. V. The will of man is made perfectly and immutably free to good alone, in the state of glory only

CHAP. X. Of Effectual Calling.

LL thofe whom God hath predeftinated unto life, and thofe only, he is pleafed in his appointed and accepted time effectually to call 4, by his word and Spirit b,

committeth fin, is the fervant of fin. v. 36. If the Son therefore fhall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

i Phil. ii. 13. For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure, Rom. vi. 18. Being then made free from fir, ye became the fervants of righteouf. nefs. v. 22. But now being made free from fin, and become fervants to God, ye have your fruit unto holinefs, and the end everlafting life.

k Gal. v. 17. For the flesh lufteth against the fpirit, and the spirit against the flesh, and these are contrary the one to the other; fo that ye cannot do the things that ye would. Rom. vii, 15. For that which I do, I allow not; for what I would, that do I not, but what I hate, that do I. v. 18. For I know, that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is prefent with me, but how to perform that which is good, I find not. v. 19. V. Eph. iv. 13. Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the ftature of the fulness of Chrift. Heb. xii. 22. To the General afferbly and church of the first born, which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the fpirits of jult men made perfect. 1 John.iii. 2. Beloved, now are we the fons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we fhall be; but we know, that when he fhall appear, we fhall be like him; for we shall fee him as he is. Jude 24. Now unto him that is able to keep you from fal ling, and to prefent you faultlefs be. fore the prefence of his glory with exceeding joy,

II. This effectual call is of God's free and fpecial grace a lone, not from any thing at all foreseen in man i, who is altogether

,e Ezek. xxxvi. 26. A new heart allo will I give you, and a new fpirit will I put within you, and I will take away the ftony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.

fEzek. xi. 19. And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new fpirit within you; and I will take the ftony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh. Phil. ii. 13. For it is God who worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Deut. xxx. 6. And the Lord thy God will cir cumcife thine heart, and the heart of thy feed, to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all all thy foul, that thou mayeft live. Ezek. xxxvi. 27. And I will put my Spirit within you, and caufe you to walk in my ftatutes, and ye fhall keep my judgments, and do them.

But God be thanked that ye were the fervants of fin; but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. v. 18. Being then inade free from fin, ye became the fervants of righteoufnefs.

II. i 2 Tim. i 9. Who hath faved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given us in Chrift Jefus, before the world began. Tit. iii. 4. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour towards map appeared. v. 5. gether paffive therein, until, being quickened and renewed by the Holy Spirit k, he is thereby enabled to answer this call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it .

II. Elect infants, by dying in infancy, are regenerated and faved by Chrift through the Spirit m, who worketh when, and where, and how he pleafeth n. So alfo are all other elect perfons, who are uncapable of being outwardly called by the miniftry of the word a.

God: v. 9. Not of works, left any man should boast. Rom. ix. 11. For the children being not yet born, neither having done good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might ftand, not of works, but of him that calleth.

Then Peter faid unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jefus Chrift, for the remiflion of fins, and ye fhall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. v. 39. For the promife is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God fhall call. And John iii. 3. Jesus anfwered and faid unto him, Verily verily, I fay unto you, Except a man be born again, he cannot fee the kingdom of God. v. 5. Jefus anfwered, Verily, verily, I fay unto thee, Except a man be born of wa ter and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. And

John v. 12, He that hath the Son, hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God, hath not life. And Rom. viii. 9. But ye are not in the fiefh, but in the Spirit, if fo be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Chrift, he is none of his. (Compar ed together.)
