FOR

SCIENCE SCHOOLS AND CLASSES.

APRIL AND MAY 1880.

SUBJECT I PRACTICAL PLANE AND SOLID GEOMETRY.

EXAMINER, LIEUTENANT G. S. CLARKE, R.E.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS.

If the rules are not attended to, the paper will be cancelled.

You may take the Elementary, or the Advanced, or the Honours paper, but you must confine yourself to one of them.

All figures must be drawn on the single sheet of paper supplied, for no second sheet will be allowed.

The constructions may be left in pencil, provided they are distinct and neat, and that the construction lines are shown. They must be strictly geometrical and not the result of calculation or trial. In the absence of those lines which are essential to a correct solution no marks will be awarded, however correct the result may appear.

Lines parallel or perpendicular to others may be drawn mechanically without showing any construction. Lines may be bisected by trial. A single accent (') signifies feet; a double accent (") inches. Put the number of the question before your answer.

You are to confine your answers strictly to the questions proposed. Questions marked (*), have accompanying diagrams.

Your name is not given to the Examiner, and you are forbidden to write to him about your answers.

The examination in this subject lasts for four hours.

First Stage or Elementary Examination.

INSTRUCTIONS.

Only eight questions are to be attempted.

Plane Geometry.

*1. The given line a b represents 110'0". What is the representative fraction of the scale? Construct the scale, showing not less than 250'0".

*2. Two equal links of a chain are given with dimensions.

*3. A geometrical pattern composed of squares and octagons is given. Draw a rectangle 41⁄2′′ × 3′′ and fill it up with this pattern. Side of squares and octagons to be 1⁄2.

(9-) N.B.-No marks will be given for this question if the pattern is merely pricked off.

4. Describe a circle of 24" diameter. Circumscribe this circle by a triangle whose sides are in the ratio 3 : 4: 6.

Solid Geometry.

*5. The projections ad', bb', cc', of three points are given, determine their elevation on z, z (8.) *6. See figure to Q. I.; a b is the plan of a line AB. The height of A is 1.35" and of B 3'75". Determine and write down the height of

C.

7. Represent :

(9.)

a. A vertical plane inclined 45° to the vertical plane of projection.

b. A horizontal line lying in a plane whose traces both make 50° with the ground line. (11.) 8. Show by its traces a line inclined at 45° to both planes of projection. (11.) 9. In a plane whose vertical and horizontal traces make 55° and 32o with the ground line respectively, place a line having the same inclination as the plane. (10.) *10. Ht, Vt, are the horizontal and vertical traces of a line; Ht,, Vt, the corresponding traces of a second line. Do these two lines intersect?

(10.) *11. The figure represents the plans of three sticks whose lower ends a b c rest on the ground and whose upper ends meet at O. The height of O is 11"o". Determine the lengths of the three sticks. The scale is 4" to 1'o".

(12.) *12. a b c represents the plan of a T square. a and c are on the horizontal plane. Determine the true size of the T square. (15.) *13. The plan and elevation of a stile formed of two square posts and three rails are given. Draw an elevation of the stile on A B. (15.)

*14. Draw a section of the stile (Q. 13) on C. D.
