and dominion ascribed, both now and ever, world without end. Amen.

FOR THE MORNING AFTER A COMMUNION SABBATH.

O LORD, we come before thee this morning, blessing thee for all the bounties of thy providence, and all the privileges of thy grace. With thankful hearts, we would recall the way by which thou hast hitherto led us; and while gratefully owning that goodness and mercy have followed us all the days of our life, we would renew the covenant by which we surrender ourselves to thee; and look up to thee for the effectual grace of thy Holy Spirit; that in time to come, whether we live, we may live unto the Lord, whether we die, we may die unto the Lord, whether we live or die, we may be the Lord's.

We give thee thanks, gracious God, for the opportunity we yesterday enjoyed, of seriously and solemnly recalling to our remembrance our unspeakable obligations to thy redeeming love. O may the great object of faith then exhibited to our view in the memorials of a communion table, dwell habitually in our thoughts; and while pursuing the ordinary tenor of our lives, may we be influenced and governed by a constraining regard to the glory of Him, who loved us, and gave himself for us. Into the scenes of social and domestic intercourse, may we carry the remembrance of him whom we have pierced; and while we

resist sin by reflecting on the guilt of again crucifying the Son of God, and putting him whom we call Lord to an open shame, may we be sustained under all our burdens, comforted in all our afflictions, and stimulated to fresh zeal and growing activity in every path of duty, by remembering that he whose body was broken and whose blood was shed, hath perfectly accomplished all the ends for which he laid down his life, and is now exalted at thy right hand a Prince and a Saviour, able to deliver to the uttermost all that come unto God by him. Looking up to him as Head over all things to his church, may we pursue our way through life, not alarmed by dangers nor depressed by fears, but persuaded that he is able to keep that which we have committed to his charge, to fulfil all his promises, to supply all our need, and after employing us in his service on earth, to bring us to himself, that where he is there we may be also. We thank thee, O Lord, for these encouraging views and hopes. Under their influence, may we go on our way rejoicing. May the Lord whom we serve go with us; may he accompany us by his Spirit, and not only enable us by faith to realize him as present with us, but vouchsafe to us such displays of his kindness and power, in the state of our feelings and the posture of our circumstances, as shall cause us with fervent gratitude at every stage of our pilgrimage to acknowledge, that not one thing hath failed of all the good things which he had promised us.

With ourselves we would commend to thy gracious remembrance all our christian brethren, and

especially those who on this occasion have partaken with us of the memorials of the Saviour's dying love. May their hearts be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgment of the mystery of God, even the Father, and of Christ. And as they have received the Lord Jesus, so may they walk in him, rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith as they have been taught. May the remembrance of the love that has been shown them sink deep into their hearts; and may the privileges they enjoy in connection with the Saviour induce them to abide in him, and to grow up into him in all things; that through him dwelling in them and daily imparting to them more of his promised Spirit, they may walk worthy of him unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God.

May such of thy people as are mourning in Zion be directed to Him as the source of comfort. If the cause of sorrow be in their circumstances, lead them to look above a world which passeth away; if in themselves, support them under the burden of infirmity, and the pressure of disease; or if sin be the cause, and they have armed the foe that divides them from thee, show them wherefore it is that thou contendest with them; stir up within them a holy resentment against the secret enemies of their peace; lead them to the blood of sprinkling; and with David's spirit, may they turn to David's Lord, crying, purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean; wash me and I

shall be whiter than snow; make me to hear joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice."

We thank thee, gracious God, in behalf of thy ministering servants. We bless thee for the countenance and aid thou hast afforded them in declaring thy truth, and in dispensing thine ordinances; for all the good they have been the means of doing to thy church at large; and especially for all the instruction, excitement, and comfort, they have been instrumental, at this time, in conveying to our minds, and to the minds of our fellow-worshippers and fellow-communicants. Abundantly and increasingly bless them : grant them more of thy Holy Spirit; more of thy presence while they minister at thine altar; more of the peace and joy that are the fruit of believing the truths which they declare to others; more of that success in their labours which shall strengthen their hands, and encourage their hearts, and be received by themselves as the best answer to their prayers, and the fullest compensation for their anxieties and toils.

Abundantly bless the provision of Zion-satisfy her poor with bread. Clothe her priests also with salvation, and let her saints shout aloud for joy: let the horn of David continue to bud; and let the lamp ordained for thine anointed burn with a brighter and a brighter flame.

Now, blessed be the Lord our God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever; and let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen.

OCCASIONAL PRAYERS.

THANKSGIVING.

O THOU who art the Lord our God, who hast remembered thy covenant for ever, we give thee thanks for all the goodness we have experienced since we came into this world. We thank thee for existence, and for all the endowments and blessings by which it has been accompanied but especially we bless thee for Jesus Christ thine unspeakable gift, for the pardon of sin, the promise of thy Spirit, and the hope of glory.

Help us, we beseech thee, to look upon our temporal lot with gratitude, and to use its blessings without abusing them. May we remember with a thankful sense of thy condescension and love, that it is He who rules among the armies of heaven, who chooseth out for us the lot of our inheritance. While receiving good (as at this time) at the hand of God, may the thought of him who bestows it double the value of the blessing; and when called
