HINTS on CHRISTIAN EXPERIENCE, and the Christian's

Duty with respect to it.

"The object of this little treatise is to urge upon Christians the duty of communicating their experience to one another, and to direct them when, and to whom, and in what manner this ought to be done, so as to be productive of advantage. We know of no subject on which a good practical treatise is so much wanted; and we know of no author who is so well qualified to supply that want.""-Edinburgh Christian Instructor.

SUNDAY MORNING.

O LORD, on this the morning of thy day, we come before thee, as thy children and servants, to renew the surrender of ourselves to thee, and to acknowledge that we are wholly thine. Fill our minds, we beseech thee, with a deep and reverential sense of thy greatness, and enable us to worship thee acceptably, with reverence and godly fear. May a sense of thy majesty overpower those mean and worldly thoughts, that are apt to intrude into our minds while engaged in thy service: May we be affected with a profound awe, while we are in the presence of the Lord of hosts. May we remember with whom we have to do; and may we find it impossible to trifle or give way to languor or indifference, while we wait upon Him whom all the inhabitants of heaven worship,

B

ceasing not day nor night to cry, " Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God of hosts; the whole earth is filled with his glory."

On this the morning sacred to the resurrection of our Lord from the dead, we desire to remember and to acknowledge our obligations to redeeming love. We give thanks to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou didst look upon us in mercy, in our low and lost estate as sinners. We bless thee that, when thou mightest have lifted up thy hand to heaven, and whetted thy glittering sword, and made it drunk with the blood of thine enemies, . thou didst visit and redeem us, and didst raise up for us an horn of salvation, in the house of thy servant David.

And we bless Him who came in the name of the Lord to save us. We give thanks to the eternal Son of the Father, who did not despise nor abhor our misery, but bore our griefs and carried our sorrows, and in his love and in his pity did redeem us. Eternal thanks be to him, who, though he was rich, yet for our sakes became poor, that we through his poverty might be made rich. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, and hath made us kings and priests unto God and our Father, to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever.

And thee also, would we magnify and bless, O Spirit of the most high God-holy and eternalproceeding from the Father and the Son. We adore thee as the Spirit of all grace, who took part in

the councils of peace, and did rest on the Saviour, replenishing him with immeasurable gifts and graces, whereby, as the Mediator of the new covenant, he became infinitely qualified for the work of our redemption. We bless thee as the Spirit who did speak by the prophets, and who, through them, and, in these last days, through the apostles, did minister unto us the things which the angels desire to look into. And now we bless thee, that as the Spirit of promise thou art nigh to all the children of God, dwelling in their hearts as in a temple, imparting to them a resemblance to thine own perfections, applying to them in all its fulness the salvation of the Gospel, separating them from this present evil world, and conforming them to the purpose of God, in calling them by Jesus Christ to his eternal kingdom and glory.

And, while thus we bless and praise thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, one God, we humbly pray thee to accept the throne of our hearts, and to reign supreme over our affections, our principles and our desires. Extend over the whole sphere of our inner man the sceptre of thy sovereign grace. Thou art our Father, our Benefactor, our Redeemer, our God. We are the creatures of thy power, the charge of thy providence, the subjects of thy government, the children of thine adoption. Make us also, we pray thee, thy willing and obedient people. Accomplish in us the whole good pleasure of thy goodness. Fulfil in us thy gracious promise-and dwell in us, and walk in us, and be a Father unto

us, and make us the sons and daughters of the Lord Almighty.

For this end, bless to us, we beseech thee, the sacred services of this day. This is the day which the Lord hath made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. Raise our minds above the cares and concerns of this present life; and enable us to look, not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen, remembering that the things which are seen are temporal, while the things that are not seen are eternal. By our manner of spending the Sabbath, may we recognise thy sovereign right to our persons and to our services; and, in all we say or do, may we be accepted of thee.

May the endeavours of thy people this day to serve thee be accompanied with thy blessing. May the eyes of the Lord our God be open upon us this day; and may he hearken unto the voice of the prayers and supplications of his servants which they shall make to him. Especially grant thy favour and thine assistance to thy ministering servants. In their hands may thy word be quick and powerful in the experience of all who hear it.

Hasten the time when it shall everywhere be published. Let every obstacle to its universal diffusion be removed. Let the crooked be made straight, and the rough places plain: and let the glory of the Lord be revealed, and let all flesh see it together. And all that we ask is in the name, and for the sake of Jesus Christ, to whom, with the Father and the Holy Ghost, be glory for ever. Amen.
