FOR THE APOSTLES' DAYS.

COLLECT.

ERCIFUL Lord, we beseech thee to cast thy bright beams of light upon thy Church, that it being instructed by the doctrine of thy blessed Apostles and Evangelists, may so walk in the light of thy truth, that it may at length attain to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

[ocr errors]

OW beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace;

That bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing:

For they shall see eye to eye, when the Lord shall bring again Zion.

Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem:

For the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem.

The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.

GO. ye, therefore, and make disciples of all naGoti

tions, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I

have commanded you; and lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

On days that commemorate the Apostles, and at other times, the following creed will have interest as being the oldest and the most universal of Church confessions, and may be used at discretion to illustrate the general belief of the Christian Church. The portions added to the ancient words in the Roman and Reformed Churches are marked in Italics.

THE APOSTLES' CREED." *

I believe in God the Father Almighty:
[Maker of heaven and earth :]

And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
Who was [conceived] by the Holy Ghost, born of the
Virgin Mary,

Suffered under Pontius Pilate,

Was crucified [dead] and buried,

[He descended into Hell,]

The third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of [God] the Father [Almighty,]

From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Ghost:
The Holy [Catholic] Church:

[The Communion of Saints:]

The forgiveness of sins:

The resurrection of the body: [And the life everlasting.]

Amen.

HYMNS.

MORNING AND EVENING.

Morning Hymn.

11s & 10s.

1 Now, when the dusky shades of night retreating,
Before the sun's red banner swiftly flee;
Now, when the terrors of the dark are fleeting,
O Lord! we lift our thankful hearts to thee.

2 To thee, whose word, the fount of life unsealing,
When hill and dale in thickest darkness lay,
Awoke bright rays across the dim earth stealing,
And bade the even and morn complete the day.

3 Look from the tower of heaven, and send to cheer us,
Thy light and truth to guide us onward still;
Still let thy mercy as of old be near us,
And lead us safely to thy holy hill.

4 So when that morn of endless light is waking,
And shades of evil from its splendor flee,
Safe may we rise, the earth's dark breast forsaking,
Through all the long bright day to dwell with thee.

[blocks in formation]

1 Now that the sun is beaming bright,

Implore we, bending low,

That he, the uncrcated Light,
May guide us as we go.
