A VOLUME OF SERMONS.

PAXTON HOOD.

"Men who cite the names of such speculators as Eigel and Fichte in the pulpit, generally make a sorry business of preaching. But it is not so with Mr. Hood. He is neither cold nor trifling; he is always grave and earnest. He spares no pains to compel his readers to understand and to realise what he designs to communicate. His reason, his imagination, and his passions are all in vigorous action, ands his manner is perhaps adapted to a coming state of thought and taste in regard to what preaching shoulde be. Certainly these are very able discourses of their kind.-British Quarterly Review.

STAR

Assurance Society,

48 MOORGATE STREET, LONDON.

The STAR LIFR ASSURANCE SOCIETY was founded in the Year 1843.

The advantages it offers to Assurers include all the benefits which have been developed during the progress of the system of Life Assurance.

BONUS.-Three distinct calculations have been made with a view of appropriating the surplus sum or profit arising from the operations of the Society. At the last, made at the beginning of the year 1859, the Actuary reported that, after putting by £180,379 18s. 10d. as a reserve for future contingencies, there was available for division £67,347 15s. 9d.; and the following Tables will show the practical effect of this and previous divisions at the ages specified :

The following are specimens of reductions in lieu of the last Bonus, for Five Years ending 1864 :

OPINIONS OF THE PRESS.

"A feature in this magazine are the political sketches by Mr. Ritchie. This month we have Lord John Russell photographed from the life. The amount of readable matter which is interspersed with the engravings is far beyond the proportion which might be expected in a periodical of the peculiar description of the "National,' which exhibits practised editorial skill."-Illustrated London News.

"The National Magazine' contains a great variety of light and amusing articles--so many, indeed, that we can only find room to advert to some of the most prominent."-Morning Star.

"The National Magazine' contains good biographical articles on Lord John Russell and the Rev. Charles Kingsley."-Literary Gazette.

"This comes fairly under the denomination of a Christmas number, and both letter-press and illustrations claim praise. The Burial of Harold' is a fine specimen of wood-engraving, and in other respects the part is almost all that can be wished."-Weekly Dispatch.

"Mr. Ritchie is improving the National Magazine,' not only by the vigour and ability of his own articles, but by the more careful attention which is paid to the details-literary, artistic, and mechanical-of the publi cation."-Sunday Times.

"The National Magazine' for the present month contains a number of short and very readable papers. We consider it at least equal to its competitor, Once a Week,' both as a pictorial and literary work. Among other papers that we have read with considerable interest is the graphic pulpit of the Rev. C. Kingsley."-Critic.
