II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Conjugate the past indefinite of the verb annoiarsi.

2. Give the plural of la specie, il comico, la caccia, la tesi, l'uovo, il calcagno, il becco.

3. Give the first person singular of the present indicative, and the first person singular of the future, of the following verbs: venire, tenere, morire, scegliere, sedere, parere, andare.

4. Quote three idioms formed with the verb stare.

5. Translate the following sentences, using the particle si :(i.) Man is not immortal. (ii) Men are sold like cattle (bestiame). (iii.) They say we shall have war. (iv.) People won't believe it.

III. Translate into Italian :

I had now a long and narrow street to pass, with the houses on each side four or five storeys high, all very old, the greater part already thrown down (sconquassare), and continually falling and threatening the passengers with inevitable death at every step, numbers of whom lay killed before me, or, what I thought far more deplorable, so bruised (pesto) and wounded that they could not stir to help themselves. For my own part, as destruction appeared to me unavoidable, I only wished I might be made an end of at once, and not have my limbs broken, like those poor unhappy wretches (tapini).

I. Translate into English :

Por de pronto hay necesidad de establecer la grande, la inmensa diferencia que existe entre instruir y educar. La instruccion tiene por objeto el desarrollo y enriquecimiento de la inteligencia. II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Give rules (with examples) for the use of the cardinal numbers cien and ciento.

2. Mention the augmentatives of jaula, gato, baston, lapiz, pincel, jardin, and lugar.

3. Write in the plural-viaje divertido, historia alegre, lago encantado, rincon sombrio, virtud extrema, pais feliz, and muchacho holgazan.

4. Explain the meaning and use of the relative pronouns quien, cual, and cuyo. Give examples.

5. Write down the first person singular of all the tenses of the indicative mood of the verb serrar; and the third person plural of all the tenses of the subjunctive mood of the verb desunir.

III. Translate into Spanish

1. The weather was very fine and warm.

2. We had been in Germany and brought home many German books.

3. We shall read them with our teacher.

4. My sister and I went last week into the country.

5. We hunted the whole day in the wood, and shot three hares and some birds.

6. We shall go to Spain in the winter, and return to England in spring.

7. The fields were covered with snow, and all the rivers were frozen.

1. What is the weight of one litre of Hydrofluoric Acid at 0°C. and 760mm, when under the same circumstances one litre of Hydrogen weighs 0.0896 grammes ? (The atomic weight of Fluorine is 19.)

2. How many Oxides of Nitrogen are there? Give the formula for each. Give any reasons for believing that there are or are not Oxides with the composition N2O, and NO.

3. What is Chloride of Lime, or bleaching powder, and how is it prepared? What change does it undergo when stirred up with water?

4. Describe precisely what happens when two volumes of NH, are brought into contact with two volumes of HCl. What occurs when the product is heated?

5. What is Bone-ash or Bone-earth, and what are its uses?

6. Give the chemical composition and, if possible, the formula for each of the following substances :-Lime, Salt, Charcoal, Chalk, Black-lead, Sand, Rust, Epsom Salts, Lead, and Oil of Vitriol.

7. Complete, if you can, the following equations:

1. Two sources of light are at a distance of six feet apart, and one of them is four times as bright as the other. At what position must a screen be placed in the right line joining them, so as to receive the same amount of light from each ?

2. A double convex lens is placed in front of a movable screen. Describe the appearances of the image presented when a candle is placed at various positions in front of the lens; the position of the screen being altered, so as to receive the image.

3. A person standing in front of a rectangular aquarium tank filled with water, and looking at the opaque back, sees that it appears curved. Explain this, and illustrate your answer by a diagram.

4. Describe the method of obtaining a pure Solar Spectrum. Give an account of the principal phenomena of Spectrum Analysis.

5. Explain the phenomenon of Twilight. Is it of the same duration in all parts of the world?
