I. Translate into English:

Peu d'années s'étaient écoulées depuis qu'Edouard I. avait été couronné à Westminster (1272), lorsque les Gallois lui déclarèrent la guerre et ravagèrent plusieurs provinces de son royaume. La mort de leur chef, nommé Llewellyn, l'ordre, dit-on, de massacrer sur le champ tous les bardes qui tomberaient au pouvoir des Anglais, déterminèrent les Gallois à se soumettre. La reine Eléonore, qui avait suivi son mari dans cette guerre, devint mère, à Carnarvon, d'un jeune prince que son père appela également Edouard. Le roi, instruit de la résolution des Gallois, fit assembler leurs principaux chefs, et, prenant le nouveau-né dans ses bras: "Vous m'avez," leur dit-il, "demandé un prince né dans votre pays, et qui ne parlât pas anglais : je vous donne mon fils Edouard, qui vient de naître à Carnarvon, et qui ne sait encore prononcer un seul mot de cette langue, ni d'aucune autre. Recevez-le donc pour prince de Galles, et rappelez-vous que désormais ce titre sera celui de l'héritier du roi d'Angleterre."

II. Grammatical Questions.

1. Conjugate throughout the imperative of venir, aller, recevoir, appeler; and the past indefinite of venir.

2. Give the feminine of- un mari, un prince, mon héritier, Monsieur le Marquis, son fils nouveau-né, son oncle paternel.

3. Distinguish between un Gallois and un Gaulois. Translate in full-Henry I., Henry II., Henry IV., and Henry V.; explaining the difference in such case between the French and the English.

4. "Peu d'années"-what words like peu thus require the preposition de to be joined to the following noun? Which one admits of du, de la, des? Give examples.

5. Can you use indifferently an or année, jour or journée, matin or matinée? Translate :-at noon; in the afternoon; in the evening. III. Translate into French :

He

Roger Bacon, who lived in Henry the Third's reign, was a monk in the Franciscan convent at Oxford, and was the most learned man of his age. He applied his learning to the discovery of useful knowledge. He invented telescopes, microscopes, and some other astronomical and mathematical instruments. discovered gunpowder, though he considered it as an object of mere curiosity. He made many valuable discoveries in medicine. In short, his genius rose so far above all his contemporaries, that he was looked upon as a magician, and was thrown into prison, where he was kept for many years.

Bei der Ostermesse, die von den Sicilianern gewöhnlich stark besucht wurde, erregte in einer Kirche unweit Palermos ein junger Franzose durch sein freches Betragen ein allgemeines Aergerniß. Es kam daher bald zum Streit, der mit der Ermordung des Franzosen endete. Da seine Landsleute ihm beistanden, so wurde die Menge nur noch mehr erregt; überall blizten versteckte Dolche hervor, und alle anwesenden Franzosen wurden niedergestoßen. Von hier verbreitete sich der Aufstand über die ganze Stadt, und bald war die ganze Insel in heller Empörung, wobei kein Franzose geschont wurde. In Verkleidungen flohen diese durch die Insel; damit aber keiner entfliehe, ließ man jeden, der als Franzosse verdächtig war, das Wort Ciceri aussprechen. Wer dies nicht richtig sprechen konnte, wurde getödtet. Den Aufstand nannte man später von der Nachmittags= messe,, die sicilianische Vesper."

11. Grammatical Questions.

3. Form adjectives from the following words: - dort, bald, diesseits, gestern, heute, Tag, Schrift, Abend, Gesell. Give the English meaning of each adjective.

4. Give the nominative plural of the following nouns :Studium, Hinderniß, Soldat, Offizier, Kasus, Thema, Ohr, Land.

5. Write down the imperfect subjunctive (1st person only) and the past participles of the following verbs :—loben, tadeln, fahren, tragen, leihen, wissen, befehlen, beginnen, können, sollen, gelingen, bieten.

6. Conjugate in full (a) the present indicative, and (b) the perfect indicative of abreisen and sich wundern.

Xerxes, a vain and foolish prince, when he made war on Greece, was told by one, that it would never come to a battle; by another, that he would find only empty cities and desolate countries, for they would not so much as stand the very fame of his coming.
