COMPOUND ADDITION.

Compound addition is the adding of sums or quantities which consist of several denominations.

RULE. 憋

Place the sums or quantities so that the numbers of the same denomination may stand directly under each other, and form a separate column; then add up the several columns, successively, beginning with the one of the lowest denomination: if the amount of either of the columns be not equal to 1 of the next higher denomination, set it down; but if it be, reduce it to that denomination, and add the number it contains of said denomination into the column of the same.

If a remainder occur on reducing the amount of any column, set it under that column.
