ReviewsUser reviewsUser Review - Flag as inappropriate Better than Dickens. Better than Steinbeck. User Review - Flag as inappropriate Riveting, soul stirring, book weaves an amazing story. User Review - Flag as inappropriate Have only just finished the book. I read a condensed version of same in a Readers Digest about 20 years ago and always wondered what happened. Now I know, and am moved, emotionally and intellectually. I had thought that Dickens was my yardstick for social commentary but now will have to add Ms Arnow and let her sit up there with all the greats. A most thought provoking novel. It is difficult to believe the characters are figments of an imagination, so alive are they - the whole book is a tapestry and a work of art. | User ratings
