Grateful and tender Remembrance.

2 O shall not warmer accents tell

The gratitude we owe

To Him, who died, our fears to quell,
Our more than orphan's woe?

3 While yet His anguished soul surveyed
Those pangs He would not flee,
What love His latest words displayed
"Meet, and remember Me."

4 Remember Thee, Thy death, Thy shame,

Our sinful hearts to share!

O memory, leave no other name
But His recorded there.

4 'Twas the same love that spread the feast, That sweetly forced us in;

Else we had still refused to taste,
And perished in our sin.

5 Pity the nations, O our God;
Constrain the earth to come;
Send Thy victorious word abroad,
And bring the strangers home.
Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), 1709. Ab

I ACCORDING to Thy gracious word,
In meek humility,

This will I do, my dying Lord,
I will remember Thee.

2 Thy body, broken for my sake,
My Bread from Heaven shall be;
Thy testamental cup I take,

And thus remember Thee.

3 When to the cross I turn mine eyes,
And rest on Calvary,

O Lamb of God, my sacrifice,
I must remember Thee:

4 And when these failing lips grow dumb, And mind and memory flee,

When Thou shalt in Thy kingdom come, Jesus, remember me.

James Montgomery (1771-1854), 1825. Ab

"O Esca viatorum.”

2 O Water, life bestowing,
From out the Saviour's heart,

A fountain purely flowing,

A fount of love Thou art: O let us, freely tasting,

Our burning thirst assuage; Thy sweetness, never wasting, Avails from age to age.

3 Jesus, this feast receiving,

We Thee unseen adore;
Thy faithful word believing,
We take, and doubt no more:
Give us, Thou true and loving,
On earth to live in Thee;
Then, death the veil removing,
Thy glorious face to see.

Unknown mediaval Author.
Tr. by Rev. Ray Palmer (1808- ), 1858.

"Ermuntert euch, ihr Frommen."

I REJOICE, rejoice, believers,
And let your lights appear;
The evening is advancing,
And darker night is near.
The Bridegroom is arising,

And soon He will draw nigh; Up, pray, and watch, and wrestle, At midnight comes the cry.

2 See that your lamps are burning,
Replenish them with oil;
Look now for your salvation,
The end of sin and toil.
The watchers on the mountain
Proclaim the Bridegroom near,
Go meet Him as He cometh,
With hallelujahs clear.

3 Ye saints, who here in patience
Your cross and sufferings bore,
Shall live and reign forever,
When sorrow is no more;
Around the Throne of glory
The Lamb ye shall behold,
In triumph cast before Him
Your diadems of gold.

4 Our Hope and Expectation,
O Jesus, now appear;
Arise, thou Sun so longed for,
O'er this benighted sphere.
With hearts and hands uplifted,
We plead, O Lord, to see
The day of earth's redemption,
And ever be with Thee.

Laurentius Laurenti (1660-1722),

Tr. by Miss Jane Borthwick (1825-), 1853. Ab. and sì. alt.

2 Once they were mourning here below,
And wet their couch with tears;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.

3 I ask them, whence their victory came? They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to His death.

4 They marked the footsteps that He trod;
His zeal inspired their breast;
And following their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.

5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise,
For His own pattern given,
While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to Heaven.

3 One army of the living God, To His command we bow;

Part of the host have crossed the flood,
And part are crossing now.

4 Dear Saviour, be our constant Guide;
Then, when the word is given,
Bid Jordan's narrow stream divide,
And land us safe in Heaven.

I HAPPY the souls to Jesus joined,
And saved by grace alone;
Walking in all Thy ways, we find
Our Heaven on earth begun.

2 The Church triumphant in Thy love,
Their mighty joys we know;
They sing the Lamb in hymns above,
And we in hymns below.

3 Thee, in Thy glorious realm, they praise,
And bow before Thy throne;
We, in the kingdom of Thy grace:
The kingdoms are but one.

4 The holy to the holiest leads;
From hence our spirits rise;
And he that in Thy statutes treads
Shall meet Thee in the skies.

Rev. Charles Wesley, 1745

3 When, free from envy, scorn, and pride, 2 Though dead, they speak in reason's ear, Our wishes all above,

Each can his brother's failings hide,
And show a brother's love;

4 When love, in one delightful stream,
Through every bosom flows;
When union sweet, and dear esteem,
In every action glows.

5 Love is the golden chain that binds
The happy souls above;

And he's an heir of Heaven that finds
His bosom glow with love.

Rev. Joseph Swain (1761-1796), 1792.

And in example live;

Their faith, and hope, and mighty deeds, Still fresh instruction give.

3 'Twas through the Lamb's most precious They conquered every foe; [blood, And to His power and matchless grace Their crowns and honors owe.

4 Lord, may I ever keep in view
The patterns Thou hast given;
And ne'er forsake the blessed path
Which led them safe to Heaven.
