HARWELL. 8.7.61.

LOWELL MASON (1792-1872), 1840,

1. COME, ye faithful, raise the anthem, Cleave the skies with shouts of praise:

Sing to Him who found the ransom, Sing to Him who found the ransom,

Ancient of eternal days: God e ter nal, Word Incarnate, Whom the Heav'n of heav'ns obeys. Ancient of eternal days:

[blocks in formation]

2 Ere He raised the lofty mountains,
Formed the sea, or built the sky,
Love eternal, free, and boundless,
Forced the Lord of Life to die;
Lifted up the Prince of princes
On the throne of Calvary.

3 Now on those eternal mountains
Stands the sapphire throne, all bright,
Where unceasing hallelujahs

They upraise, the sons of light:
Zion's people tell His praises,
Victor after hard-won fight.

4 Bring your harps and bring your incense,
Sweep the string and pour the lay;
Let the earth proclaim His wonders,
King of that celestial day :
He, the Lamb once slain, is worthy,
Who was dead and lives for aye.

Rev. Job Hupton (1762-1849), 1808. Ab.
Alt. by Rev. John Mason Neale (1818-1866), 1851.

NEANDER. 8.7.61.

I JESUS, Lord of Life eternal,

Taking those He loved the best, Stood upon the Mount of Olives,

And His own the last time blest:
Then, though He had never left it,
Sought again His Father's breast.
2 Knit is now our flesh to Godhead,
Knit in everlasting bands:
Call the world to highest festal:
Floods and oceans, clap your hands:
Angels, raise the song of triumph:
Make response, ye distant lands.

3 Loosing death with all its terrors
Thou ascendedst up on high;
And to mortals, now immortal,
Gavest immortality,

As Thine own disciples saw Thee
Mounting Victor to the sky.
Joseph of the Studium (
Tr. by Rev. John Mason Neale, 1862.

2 That Upper Room is Heaven on earth: Within its precincts lie

All that earth has of faith, or hope,

Or Heaven-born charity.

3 He comes! He comes! that mighty Breath From Heaven's eternal shores;

His uncreated freshness fills

His Bride, as she adores.

4 Earth quakes before that rushing blast,
Heaven echoes back the sound,
And mightily the tempest wheels
That Upper Room around.

5 One moment-and the Spirit hung
O'er all with dread desire;
Then broke upon the heads of all
In cloven tongues of fire.

6 The Spirit came into the Church
With His unfailing power;
He is the living Heart that beats
Within her at this hour.

7 Most tender Spirit, mighty God,
Sweet must Thy presence be,
If loss of Jesus can be gain,
So long as we have Thee!

Rev. Frederick William Faber (1814-1863), 1849. Ab. and sl. alt.

Before His feet the clouds were riven,
Half darkness, and half flame.

2 But when He came the second time,
He came in power and love;
Softer than gale at morning prime
Hovered His holy Dove.

3 The fires, that rushed on Sinai down
In sudden torrents dread,

Now gently light, a glorious crown,
On every sainted head.

4 And, as on Israel's awe-struck ear
The voice exceeding loud,

The trump that angels quake to hear,
Thrilled from the deep dark cloud;

5 So, when the Spirit of our God
Came down His flock to find,

A voice from Heaven was heard abroad, A rushing mighty wind.

6 It fills the Church of God, it fills
The sinful world around;

Only in stubborn hearts and wills
No place for it is found.

7 Come, Lord, come Wisdom, Love, and

2 Great Comforter, to Thee we cry;
O highest gift of God most high,
O Fount of life, O Fire of love,
And sweet anointing from above!

3 Kindle our senses from above,

And make our hearts o'erflow with love;
With patience firm, and virtue high,
The weakness of our flesh supply.

+ Far from us drive the foe we dread,
And grant us Thy true peace instead ;
So shall we not, with Thee for Guide,
Turn from the path of life aside.

Rabanus Maurus (776-856),

Lead me to God, my final Rest,
In His enjoyment to be blest.

4 Lead me to holiness, the road
That I must take to dwell with God;
Lead me to Christ, the living Way,
Nor let me from His pastures stray.
Rev. Simon Browne (1680-1732), 1720. Ab. and alt.

Tr. by Rev. Edward Caswall (1814-1878), 1849. Ab and alt. 2 Enlightened by Thy heavenly ray,

265 Prayer for Light and Guidance.

I COME, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With peace and healing from above;
Be Thou my Light, be Thou my Guide,
O'er every thought and step preside.

2 The light of truth to me display,
That I may know and choose my way;
Plant holy fear within my heart,
That I from God may ne'er depart.
3 Conduct me safe, conduct me far,
From every sin and hurtful snare;

Our shades and darkness turn to day; Thine inward teachings make us know Our danger and our refuge, too.

3 Thy power and glory work within, And break the chains of reigning sin; Do our imperious lusts subdue,

And form our wretched hearts anew.

4 The troubled conscience knows Thy voice;
Thy cheering words awake our joys;
Thy words allay the stormy wind,
And calm the surges of the mind.

Rev. Isaac Watts (1674-1748), 1709.
