FOREWORD

In presenting this Sight Book of Parallel Passages for Sight Translation, the editor desires to state that although it was prepared to fit a definite need in one of the normal colleges, it will be found useful in a larger field. It files no claim for originality but it is offered as one of the timely attempts to solve an actual problem.

The editor desires to acknowledge his debt of gratitude to Dr. Ernst Riess and his associates in the Boys' High School, Brooklyn; to Prof. Ernest Gottlieb Sihler, of New York University; to Prof. Gonzales Lodge, of Columbia; to Miss Joanna A. Reed and Miss Christabel Flood of the Normal College, New York; to Prof. H. R. Fairclough, editor-in-chief of the Student Series, for scholarly and helpful suggestions (and to Benjamin L. D'Ooge, Ph. D., for the Groups of Related Words and the Table of Synonyms and Contrasted Words from his popular edition of the Orations of Cicero).

MAY, 1911.
