4 Fools never raife their thoughts fo high;
Like brutes they live, like brutes they die ;
Like grafs they flourish, 'till thy breath
Blaft them in everlasting death.

5 But I fhall fhare a glorious part,
When grace hath well refin'd my heart,
And fresh fupplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil, to cheer my head.

6 Sin (my worst enemy before)

Shall vex my eyes and ears no more;
My inward foes fhall all be flain,
Nor Satan break my peace again.

Then fhall I fee, and hear, and know,
All I defir'd or with'd below;
And ev'ry pow'r find fweet employ
In that eternal world of joy.

PSALM XCII. 2d Part. Long Metre.
Ver. 12, &c. The church is the garden of God.

.I

ORD, 'tis a pleasant thing to stand
In gardens planted by thy hand;

Let me within thy courts be seen
Like a young cedar, fresh and green.

2 There grow thy faints in faith and love,
Bleft with thine influence from above;
Not Lebanon, with all its trees,
Yields fuch a comely fight as these.

3 The plants of grace fhall ever live ;
(Nature decays, but grace muft thrive)
Time, that doth all things else impair,
Still makes them flourish ftrong, and fair.

4 Laden with fruits of age, they fhew
The Lord is holy, just and true:
None that attend his gates fhall find
A God unfaithful or unkind.

PSALM XCIII.

JE

Long Metre.

The eternal and fovereign God.
EHOVAH reigns; he dwells in light,
Girded with majefty and might :
The world, created by his hands,
Still on its first foundation stands.
2 But ere this fpacious world was made,
Or had its firit foundation laid,
Thy throne eternal ages ftood,
Thyfelf the ever-living God.

3 Like floods the angry nations rife,
And aim their rage against the fkies;
Vain floods, that aim their rage so high!"
At thy rebuke the billows die.

4 For ever fhall thy throne endure;
Thy promise ftands for ever sure
And everlasting holiness

Becomes the dwellings of thy grace.

PSALM XCIII. ft Part. Partic.Metre.
I THE Lord of glory reigns, he reigns on high:
His robes of ftate are ftrength and majesty :
This wide creation rofe at his command,
Built by his word, and 'stablish'd by his hand :
Long flood his throne ere he began creation,
And his own Godhead is the firm foundation.
2 God is th' eternal King. Thy foes in vain
Raise their rebellions to confound thy reign:
In vain the ftorms, in vain the floods arife,
And roar, and tofs their waves against the skies:

[ocr errors]

Foaming at heav'n,they rage with wild commotion, But heav'n's high arches fcorn the fwelling ocean. 3 Ye tempefts, rage no more; ye floods, be ftill; And the mad world fubmiffive to his will:Built on his truth, his church muft ever stand Firm are his promifes, and strong his hand: See his own fons, when they appear before him, Bow at his footstool, and with fear adore him.

HE Lord Jehovah reigns,

THE

And royal state maintains,

His head with awful glories crown'd;
Array'd in robes of light,
Begirt with fov'reign might,
And rays of majefty around.

Upheld by thy commands,
The world fecurely ftands;
And fkies and ftars obey thy word :
Thy throne was fix'd on high,
Before the ftarry sky;

Eternal is thy kingdom, Lord.

In vain the noify crowd,

Like billows fierce and loud, Against thine empire rage and roar : In vain, with angry spite,

The furly nations fight,

And dafh like waves against the fhore.
4 Let floods and nations rage,
And all their pow'rs engage :
Let fwelling tides affault the fky;
The terrors of thy frown

Shall beat their madnefs down;
Thy throne for ever ftands on high.

5 Thy promifes are true,

Thy grace is ever new;

There fix'd, thy church fhall ne'er remove; Thy faints with holy fear

Shall in thy courts appear, And fing thine everlasting love.

Repeat the fourth ftanza, if necessary.

PSALM XCIV. 1ft Part. Com. Metre.

Ver. 1, 2, 7-14.

Saints chaftifed, and finners deftroyed; or, inftructive afflictions.

GOD, to whom revenge belongs,
Proclaim thy wrath aloud;

Let fov'reign pow'r redrefs our wrongs,
Let juftice fmite the proud.

2 They fay, "The Lord nor fees nor hears ;"
When will the fools be wife !
Can he be deaf, who form'd their ears?
Or blind, who made their eyes?

3 He knows their impious thoughts are vain,
And they fhall feel his pow'r ;
His wrath fhall pierce their fouls with pain,
In fome furprifing hour.

4 But if thy faints deferve rebuke,
Thou haft a gentler rod;

Thy providences and thy book

Shall make them know their God.

5 Bleft is the man thy hands chastise,
And to his duty draw:

Thy fcourges make thy children wife,
When they forget thy law.

6 But God will ne'er caft off his faints,
Nor his own promise break;
He pardons his inheritance,

For their Redeemer's fake.

PSALM XCIV. 2d Part. Com. Metre. Ver. 16-23.

God our fupport and comfort; or, deliverance from temptation and perfecution..

I

HO will arife and plead my right
Against my num'rous foes?

WHO

While earth and hell their force unite,
And all my hopes oppofe.

2 Had not the Lord, my Rock, my Help,
Suftain'd my fainting head,

3

My life had now in filence dwelt,
My foul amongst the dead.

"Alas! my fliding feet," 1 cry'd ;
Thy promife was my prop:

Thy grace ftood conftant by my fide;
Thy fpirit bore me up.

4 While multitudes of mournful thoughts
Within my bofom roll,

5

Thy boundless love forgives my faults,
Thy comforts cheer my foul.

Pow'rs of iniquity may rife,

And frame pernicious laws;

But God, my refuge, rules the skies,
He will defend my cause.

6 Let malice vent her rage aloud,
Let bold blafphemers fcoff;

The Lord our God fhall judge the proud, And cut the finners off.
