It is a different Tranflation from that which was printed by Andro Hart, 1615. which likewife wants Baftingius's Arguments and Ufes. The Scrip tures are corrected by Sylburgius's Edition of it in Greck and Latin, printed at Heidelberg 1597. and by a very good Copy of Pareus's Commentary upon it.

This is the little Catechism which has always been taught in the Grammar Schools of Scotland. It is faid to be compofed by Mr. Andrew Simpfon, the Author of the Latin Rudiments, which begins, Quum literarum confide ratio, who was Mafter of the Grammar School at Perth, before and in the Time of the Reformation; and after ward was the firft Proteftant Minister of Dumbar,

This Edition is according to that which was printed 1621. and is faid to have been published by Mr. David Calderwood. The typographical Errors are corrected; fome Words which probably have been omitted by the Printer, are fupplied from other Copies, but they are printed in the Saxon Character; and a few various Readings are printed on the Foot-margin, with fome other Remarks. In this Edition the Book is divided into Chapters, and the Paragraphs are numbred.

The Publifhers are uncertain whether this was ever printed before or not, or whether it had the publick Authority of the Church: But finding it written in an old Hand, in a Book, with fome old Acts of Affembly, they have prefumed to caufe print it in this Collection.

It is uncertain when this was written; but it is in the Manufcript of Knox's Hiftory, which is in the College Library of Glasgow, and is printed by Robert Leckprevik, 1569. according to which this Edition is printed. It is approved by the General Affembly, April 1582. Seff. 12. in thefe Words, Concerning ane general Ordor of Admiffion to the Office of Eldaris, referris it to the Ordor ufit at Edinburgh, qubilk we approve,

This is printed according to the manufcript Acts of Affembly, feveral Copies were compared: The Publishers had likewife the Ufe a Copy from Mr. Robert Wodrom Minifter at Eastwood, written in an old Hand. This Edition is also compared with all the printed Copies of this Book, namely that which was printed 1621. which agrees almost in every Word with the Copy in Calderwood's Hiftory, and that printed at London 1642. the Copy in Spotfwood's Hiftory, and that printed in Holland 1682. which is faid to be exactly according to the old Copy in the Presbytery-book of Haddingtoun. The various Readings are on the Margin.

This is a Tranflation of the national Covenant as it was fubfcribed 1581. published at that Time; but it came not to the Publishers Hands, till after the English was printed: It is therefore put here at the End of this Volume, that it may be preferved. It is faid to be done by Mr. John Craig, who wrote the English, which was firft fubfcribed by the King, the whole Council, and the Court. It is a much better Verfion than that which is in the Syntagma Confeffionum.
