About the author (1988)

The foremost leader of nineteenth-century German Orthodoxy, Hirsch had a background in Talmud in addition to some study of Greek and Roman classics at the University of Bonn. He is best known for his passionate advocacy of Orthodoxy and his polemics against the new Reform movement. He opposed any notion of historical development of Jewish laws and customs. Hirsch's ideas and methods continue to shape the lives of many contemporary Jews.
