INTRODUCTION.

THE present volume would not have been issued for years to come, but for the unexpected appearance of a work called "THE MISCELLANEOUS WORKS OF J. T. HEADLEY," compiled without my knowledge or consent. I had laid by some articles which cost me a great deal of labor, intending to add to them papers on criticism, authors, and books, when greater leisure would allow me to complete them. These latter will hereafter appear in another volume. The spurious work alluded to, is composed of articles most of which are entirely out of place, under the grave title of "Miscellanies." Seven or eight of them are a part of my published works, where they will be found in their proper places, and from which they have been taken, on the ground that having been given to Magazines before those works were issued, they were not legally copyrighted. The compiler has thus imposed on the public by publishing pieces as miscellanies, which are not,
