1 Nor all the blood of beasts On Jewish altars slain,

Could give the guilty conscience peace,
Or wash away the stain.

2 But Christ, the heavenly Lamb,
Takes all our sins away;
A sacrifice of nobler name
And richer blood than they.

3 My faith would lay her hand
On that dear head of Thine,
While like a penitent I stand,
And there confess my sin.

4 Believing, we rejoice

To see the curse remove;

1 My God, permit my tongue
This joy, to call Thee mine;
And let my early cries prevail
To taste Thy love divine.

2 My thirsty, fainting soul
Thy mercy does implore;
Not travellers in desert lands
Can pant for water more.

3 Within Thy churches, Lord,
I long to find my place,

Thy power and glory to behold, And feel Thy quickening grace. 4 Since Thou hast been my help, To Thee my spirit flies;

And on Thy watchful providence
My cheerful hope relies.

5 The shadow of Thy wings

My soul in safety keeps;

I follow where my Father leads,
And He supports my steps.

1 BLEST are the sons of peace,

Whose hearts and hopes are one;

Whose kind designs to serve and please
Through all their actions run.

We bless the Lamb with cheerful voice, 2 Blest is the pious house,

And sing His bleeding love.

251

1 A CHARGE to keep I have; A God to glorify,

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky;

Where zeal and friendship meet;

Their songs of praise, their mingling

VOWS,

Make their communion sweet.

3 Thus, on the heavenly hills, The saints are blest above,

Where joy, like morning-dew, distils, And all the air is love.
