1 I HEARD the voice of Jesus say,

[ocr errors]

Come unto me and rest;

Lay down, thou weary one, lay down
Thy head upon my breast."

2 I came to Jesus as I was,
Weary, and worn, and sad;
I found in Him a resting-place,
And He has made me glad.

3 I heard the voice of Jesus say,
Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live."

4 I came to Jesus, and I drank

Of that life-giving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,

And now I live in Him.

1 WHILE Thee I seek, protecting Power,
Be my vain wishes stilled;
And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled!

Thy love the power of thought bestowed;

To Thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed;
That mercy I adore.

3 In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

Each blessing to my soul more dear Because conferred by Thee.

4 In every joy that crowns my days, In every pain I bear,

My heart shall find delight in praise, Or seek relief in prayer.

5 When gladness wings my favored hour,
Thy love my thoughts shall fill;
Resigned when storms of sorrow lower,
My soul shall meet Thy will.

6 My lifted eye, without a tear,
The gathering storm shall see;
My steadfast heart shall know no fear,
That heart shall rest on Thee.

5 Thus, till my last expiring day,
I'll bless my God and King;
Thus will I lift my hands to pray,
And tune my lips to sing.

1 WHEN all Thy mercies, O my God, My rising soul surveys,

Transported with the view, I'm lost In wonder, love, and praise.

2 Ten thousand thousand precious gifts My daily thanks employ:

Nor is the least a cheerful heart
That tastes those gifts with joy.

3 Through every period of my life
Thy goodness I'll pursue;

And after death, in distant worlds,
The glorious theme renew.

4 Through all eternity, to Thee
A joyful song I'll raise;
But O eternity's too short
To utter all Thy praise!

1 How sweet, how heavenly is the sight,
When those who love the Lord
In one another's peace delight,
And so fulfil His word.

2 When each can feel his brother's sigh, And with him bear a part;

When sorrow flows from eye to eye,
And joy from heart to heart!

3 When, free from envy, scorn, and pride Our wishes all above,

Each can his brother's failings hide, And show a brother's love!

4 Let love, in one delightful stream, Through every bosom flow;

And union sweet, and dear esteem,
In every action glow.

5 Love is the golden chain that binds The happy souls above;

And he's an heir of heaven who finds His bosom glow with love.
