1 ASLEEP in Jesus! blesséd sleep
From which none ever wakes to weep!
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes!

2 Asleep in Jesus! O how sweet
To be for such a slumber meet!
With holy confidence to sing

That death has lost his venomed sting!

3 Asleep in Jesus! peaceful rest

Whose waking is supremely blest! No fear, no woe, shall dim that hour That manifests the Saviour's power.

4 Asleep in Jesus! O for me

May such a blissful refuge be:
Securely shall my ashes lie,

And wait the summons from on high.

1 How blest the sacred tie that binds In union sweet according minds; How swift the heavenly course they

run

Whose hearts, whose faith, whose hopes

are one.

2 To each the soul of each how dear!
What jealous love, what holy fear!
How doth the generous flame within
Refine from earth and cleanse from sin!

3 Their streaming tears together flow
For human guilt and mortal woe;
Their ardent prayers together rise
Like mingling flames in sacrifice.

4 Nor shall the glowing flame expire
When nature droops her sickening fire;
Then shall they meet in realms above,
A heaven of joy, a heaven of love.

80

1 How sweet to leave the world awhile,
And seek the presence of our Lord!
Dear Saviour! on Thy people smile,
And come according to Thy word.

2 From busy scenes we now retreat,
That we may here converse with Thee;
Ah Lord! behold us at Thy feet;
Let this the "gate of heaven” be.

81

1 How blest the righteous when he dies,
When sinks a weary soul to rest!
How mildly beam the closing eyes,
How gently heaves the expiring breast!
2 So fades a summer cloud away;
So sinks the gale when storms are o'er ;
So gently shuts the eye of day;
So dies a wave along the shore.

3 A holy quiet reigns around,

A calm which life nor death destroys; Nothing disturbs that peace profound Which his unfettered soul enjoys.

4 Life's labor done, as sinks the clay, Light from its load the spirit flies, While heaven and earth combine to say, How blest the righteous when he dies!

82

1 DEAR Saviour, if these lambs should stray

From Thy secure enclosure's bound,
And, lured by worldly joys away,
Among the thoughtless crowd be found,

2 Remember still that they are Thine,
That Thy dear sacred name they bear;
Think that the seal of love divine,
The sign of covenant grace, they wear.

3 In all their erring, sinful years,
O let them ne'er forgotten be!
Remember all the prayers and tears
Which made them consecrate to Thee.

4 And when these lips no more can pray, These eyes can weep for them no more, Turn Thou their feet from folly's way, The wanderers to Thy fold restore.

83

1 DISMISS us with Thy blessing, Lord;
Help us to feed upon Thy word;
All that has been amiss forgive,
And let Thy truth within us live.

2 Though we are guilty, Thou art good
Wash all our works in Jesus' blood;
Give every burdened soul release,
And bid us all depart in peace.
