The ocean yawned, and rudely blowed The wind that | tossed my founder- 4 ing bark.

Deep horror then my vitals froze; Death-struck, I ceased the tide to | stem,

When suddenly a star arose,

Thou

Within the veil art | entered | now,
To offer there Thy precious blood,
Once poured on earth a cleansing
flood.

It was the Star-the | Star of Beth- 5 And thence the church, Thy chosen lehem.

3 It was my guide, my light, my all;
It bade my dark fore- | bodings | cease;
And through the storm, and danger's
thrall,

It led me to the port of peace.
Now safely moored, my perils o'er,
I'll sing first-in night's | diadem,
Forever and for evermore,

The Star-the | Star of Bethlehem!

bride,

With countless gifts of grace sup

plied,

Through all her members draws from
Thee

Her hidden life of | sancti- | ty.

6 O Christ, our Lord, of Thy dear care
Thy lowly members | heavenward |
bear;

Be ours with Thee to suffer pain,
With Thee for | ever- | more to | reign.

1 WHEN Jordan hushed his waters still, And silence slept on | Zion's | hill; When Bethlehem's shepherds through the night

Watched o'er their | flocks by | starry | light;

2 On wheels of light, on wings of flame, The glorious hosts of | Zion | came; High heaven with songs of triumph rung,

While thus they | struck their | harps,
and sung:

3 "O Zion, lift thy raptured eye!
The long-expected hour is nigh;
Renewed, creation smiles again,
The Prince of | Salem | comes to |
reign.

"He comes to cheer the trembling heart,
Bid Satan and his | host de- | part;
Again the Daystar gilds the gloom,
Again the bowers of | Eden | bloom."

1 JESUS, our best belovéd Friend, Draw out our souls in pure desire! Jesus, in love to us descend, Baptize us with Thy Spirit's fire!

On Thy redeeming Name we call, Poor and unworthy though we be : Pardon and sanctify us all; Let each Thy full salvation see.

Our souls and bodies we resign,
To fear and follow Thy commands;
O take our hearts, our hearts are thine,
Accept the service of our hands.

4 Firm, faithful, watching unto prayer,
May we Thy blesséd will obey;
Toil in the vineyard here, and bear
The heat and burder of the day

5 Yet, Lord. for us a resting-place
In heaven, at Thy right hand prepare
And till we see Thee face to face,
Be all our conversation there

40

1 WHEN sins and fears prevailing rise,
And fainting hope almost expires,
Jesus, to Thee I lift mine eyes;
To Thee I breathe my soul's desires.

2 If my immortal Saviour lives,
Then my immortal life is sure;
His word a firm foundation gives;
Here may I build and rest secure.
3 Here let my faith unshaken dwell;
Immovable the promise stands;
Not all the powers of earth or hell
Can e'er dissolve the sacred bands.

4 Here, O my soul, thy trust repose; If Jesus is forever mine,

Not death itself, that last of foes,
Shall break a union so divine.

41

1 Now to the Lord, Who makes us know
The wonders of His dying love,
Be humble honors paid below,
And strains of nobler praise above,

2 'Twas He that cleansed our foulest sins, And washed us in His richest blood; 'Tis He that makes us priests and kings, And brings us rebels near to God.

3 To Jesus, our atoning priest,
To Jesus, our superior king,
Be everlasting power confessed,
And every tongue His glory sing.

42

1 Now I resolve with all my heart,
With all my powers, to serve the Lord;
Nor from His ways will I depart,
Whose service is a rich reward.

2 O be this service all my joy!
Around let my example shine,
Till others love the blest employ,
And join in labors so divine.

3 Be this the purpose of my soul,
My solemn, my determined choice,
To yield to His supreme control,
And in His kind commands rejoice.

4 O may I never faint nor tire,

Nor wandering, leave His sacred ways; Great God, accept my soul's desire, And give me strength to live Thy praise.

43.

1 THINE earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we lovc
But there's a nobler rest above;
To that our longing souls aspire
With ardent pangs of strong desire

2 No more fatigue, no more distress;
Nor sin, nor hell, shall reach the place
No groans shall mingle with the songs
Which warble from immortal tongue.

3 No rude alarms of raging foes,
No cares to break the long repose;
No midnight shade, no clouded sur
But sacred, high, eternal noon

4 O long-expected day, begin'

Dawn on these realms of woe ana sir! Fain would we leave this weary road And sleep in death to rest with God.

1 SWEET is the work, my God, my King, To praise Thy name, give thanks and sing;

To show Thy love by morning light,
And talk of all Thy truth at night.

2 My heart shall triumph in my Lord, And bless His works, and bless His word:

Thy works of grace, how bright they shine!

How deep Thy counsels, how divine!

3 Lord, I shall share a glorious part
When grace hath well refined my heart;
And fresh supplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil, to cheer my head.

1 Then shall I see, and hear, and know,
All I desired or wished below;
And every power find sweet employ
In that eternal world of joy.

45

1 JESUS, Thy Blood and Righteousness
My beauty are, my glorious dress;
'Midst flaming worlds, in these arrayed,
With joy shall I lift up my head.

2 When from the dust of death I rise,
To claim my mansion in the skies,
E'en then, shall this be all my plea:
Jesus hath lived, hath died for me.

3 This spotless robe the same appears,
When ruined nature sinks in years;
No age can change its glorious hue,
The robe of Christ is ever new.

40 let the dead now hear Thy voice! Bid, Lord, Thy mourning ones rejoice; Their beauty this, their glorious dress, Jesus, the Lord our Righteousness.

3 Blest are the souls that find a place Within the temple of Thy grace; There they behold Thy gentler rays, And seek Thy face and learn Thy praise.

4 Cheerful they walk with growing strength,

Till all shall meet in heaven at length;
Till all before Thy face appear,
And join in nobler worship there.

47

1 COME, dearest Lord, descend and dweli, By faith and love in every breast; Then shall we know, and taste, and feel The joys that cannot be expressed.

2 Come, fill our hearts with inward strength,

Make our enlargéd souls possess And learn the height, and breadth, and length

Of Thine unmeasurable grace.

3 Now to the God whose power can do More than our thoughts and wishes know,

Be everlasting honors done,

By all the church, through Christ the Son.

48

1 ANOTHER Six days' work is done; Another Sabbath is begun.

Return, my soul, enjoy the rest; Improve the day thy God hath blest.

2 O that our thoughts and thanks may rise

As grateful incense to the skies;

And draw from heaven that sweet re

pose

Which none but he that feels it knows.

3 This heavenly calm within the breast
Is the dear pledge of glorious rest
Which for the church of God remains,
The end of cares, the end of pains.

4 In holy duties let the day
In holy pleasures pass away.
How sweet a Sabbath thus to spend,
In hope of one that ne'er shall end!
