CHARLES GRANT, BARON GLENELG, of Glenelg, co. Inverness, Secretary of State for the Colonial Department, P. C., advanced to the Peerage, by patent, dated 8 May 1835.

His lordship is descended from the ancient family of GRANT, of Grant: in 1380, Dominus Laurentius Grant was sheriff of Inverness; John Grant, the chief of that name, m. Margaret, da. of sir James Ogilvie, of Deskford, (ancestor of the earls of Findlater,) and had issue, 1. James, who carried on the elder line; 2. John, called Oig, or the younger, who, 1509, obtained a charter from K. James IV. of certain lands in Glenurquhart, Inverness-shire, called the Braes; hem. a da. of Strachan, of Culloden, and had issue, John Oig Grant, of the Braes, who, by Margery, his wife, da. of John Roy Grant, of Ballindalloch, had issue, Alexander, of Shewglie, who m. Lilias, da. of Peter Grant, of Glenmoriston, and left a son, Robert, also of Shewglie, who by Margaret, his wife, da. of James Fraser, of Balfachraggan, (a cadet of the Lovat family,) had three sons, viz.

1. ROBERT, killed at Auldern.

2. JAMES, who carried on the line of Grant, of Shewglie, Redcastle, and Moy. 3. PATRICK.

Patrick Grant, third son, m. the da. of Hugh Fraser, of Grebet, and had Robert Grant, who, by his wife, niece of Chisholm, chief of that name, had Alexander Grant, who m. Margaret, da. of Donald Macbean,

of Kinchyle, and was father of CHARLES GRANT, many years M.P. for Invernessshire, and one of the most distinguished directors of the East India Company; he m. Jane, da. of Thomas Fraser, esq., a younger son of Fraser, of Balnain, co. Inverness, and d. 31 Oct. 1823, leaving issue,

2. Sir ROBERT, G.C.H., P.C., and governor of Bombay, m. Margaret, da. of sir David Davidson, of Cantray, co. Nairn, and has issue, one da.

EDWARD-JOHN LITTLETON, BARON HATHERTON, of Hatherton, co. Stafford; born 18 March 1791; took the name and arms of Littleton on succeeding to the estates of his great uncle, sir Edward Littleton, by royal sign manual, 23 July 1812; represented the co. of Stafford in Parliament, from the decease of his uncle sir Edward, till his elevation to the Peerage; appointed, 7 May 1833, Secretary for Ireland, which he

resigned Nov. 1834, and was created Baron Hatherton aforesaid, by patent, 11 May following; married, 21 Dec. 1812, Hyacinthe-Mary, da. of Richard, marquess Wellesley, and has issue,-1. THE family of Littleton has been seated from a remote period in the co. of Worcester. Thomas de Luttelton, temp. Henry III., m., 1st, Emma, da. and h. of sir Simon de Frankley, knt.; and 2dly, Anselm, da. and h. of William Fitzwarren, of Upton, co. Worcester, justice itinerant and judge of the common pleas; his great-grandda. and h., Elizabeth, m. Thomas Westcote, esq., who thereupon took the surname of Littleton, and was father of sir Thomas Littleton, K.B., judge of the common pleas, and author of the Treatise on Tenures;" by his wife, Joan, da. and co-h. of sir William Burley, knt., and widow of sir Philip Chetwynd, he had 3 sons, whose descendants have all been ennobled, viz.

3. THOMAS, of Spetchley, co. Worcester, ancestor of sir Edmund Lyttleton, lord keeper, who was advanced to the dignity of baron Lyttleton, of Mounslow, co. Salop, by patent, 18 Feb. 1640, but dying without male issue, 1645, that title became extinct.

JOHN BYNG, BARON STRAFFORD, of Harmondsworth, co. Middlesex, so created by patent, dated 12 May 1835; G.C.B., G.C.H., K.M.T., K.S.G., a Lieut.-Gen. in the Army, Colonel of the 29th Foot, and Governor of Londonderry and Culmore. His lordship has twice received the unanimous thanks of both houses of parliament for his services in the Peninsula, and at the battle of Waterloo; and from his Majesty, as an especial mark of his royal approbation of the "signal intrepidity and heroic valour displayed by him in the action fought at Mouguerre, near Bayonne, 18 Dec. 1813," permission that he and his descendants may bear as an honourable augmentation to their armorial bearings, the colours of the 31st regiment of foot, which he had himself planted on that day on the enemy's lines; his lordship married, 1st, 14 June 1804, Mary, eldest da. of Peter Mackenzie, esq., and has issue,1. CHARLES-CHRISTOPHER PEPYS, BARON COTTENHAM, of Cottenham, co. Cambridge, so created by patent, 20 Jan. 1836; P.C., D.C.L., Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, Official Visitor of Oriel College, Oxford, and of Pembroke and Catharine Halls, Cambridge, and an Official Trustee of the British and Hunterian Museums. His lordship was called to the bar by the Society of Lincoln's Inn, 23 Nov. 1804; appointed a King's Counsel, 1826; Solicitor-general to the Queen, 1830; received the honour of Knighthood, 26 Feb. 1834, on being appointed Solicitor-general to the King; on the 29 Sept. in the same year he suc ceeded Sir John Leach as Master of the Rolls, and was sworn a Member of the Privy Council, and 23 April 1835, was appointed one of the Lords Commissioners of the Great Seal, and so continued till his elevation to the woolsack in Jan. following; born 29 April 1781, married, 30 June 1821, Caroline, da. of William Wingfield, esq., by Lady Charlotte-Maria, da. of Henry, 1st earl of Digby, and has issue,- 1. Sir John Campbell's family, originally from Argyllshire, has been settled nearly two centuries in the co. of Fife: his ancestor, George Campbell, was greatly injured in his circumstances by his steady attachment to the head of his clan, the first marquess of Argyll, who was beheaded at the market cross of Edinburgh, 1661, condemned, upon accusation of the earl of Middleton, for complying with Oliver Cromwell in the death of king Charles I.; with the wreck of his fortune he settled in St. Andrews in 1662, and became proprietor of the estate of Baltullo. His eldest son, John, took the degree of A.M. at St. Andrews, 1687, and gained the highest honours of that university; his grandson, the rev. dr. George

Campbell, minister of Cupar, d. 1825, having m., 1776, Magdalene, only da. of John Hallyburton, esq., (of the Fodderance branch of the Hallyburtons of Pitcur,) and leaving issue,
