A Little While : Land P . HE Cathedral, of which we furnish an excellent cut, is one of the chief ornaments of Milan, the chief city of Lombard;, formerly one of the petty states into which Italy was divided, but now forming a part of the recently established kingdom of Italy. The cathedral which was begun in 1386, is not yet quite finished. It is built of white stone. The style of architecture is a kind of florid or modern Gothic; the front is of a mixed style. The exterior, with its hundred spires and its 3,000 statues of various sizes, looks like a forest of marble. The interior is vast and imposing, and not loaded with ornaments. There are fivehundred and twenty steps to ascend in order to reach a gallery which runs round the principal spire, from which there is a most splendid view of the whole Lombard plain, and of the chain of Alps which borders it, in the form of a crescent, on the north side. Milan is, a gay, thriving, modern city, and has been called “ the little Paris.” Its inhabitants are said to be fond of good living; but they are also noted for their attention to the arts, and have among them many learned men.
