HARVARD COUCOG LIBRARY
CITS OF

MICO ELLEN L. WENTWORTH

SEP 13 1941

Entered, according to the Act of Congress, in the year 1886, by
WEBSTER WELLS,

in the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.

TYPOGRAPHY BY J. S. CUSHING & Co., BOSTON.

PREFACE.

In the preparation of this work the author has endeavored to meet the wants of schools of lower grade, as well as the more advanced requirements of colleges and scientific schools. While sufficiently elementary for those who are beginning the study of Geometry, it still contains as much as is usually given in a college course.

Particular attention has been given to the arrangement of the pages. The various statements made in the course of a demonstration occupy separate paragraphs, and care has been taken to avoid the necessity while reading a proof of turning the page for reference to the figure.

A special feature of the work consists in its numerous easy exercises and numerical problems, which have been carefully selected with a view to the exclusion of those of too great difficulty. All the exercises given immediately in connection with the various Books are believed to be within the reach of the average student, and the teacher is strongly advised to insist on them as an integral part of the work. Too much stress cannot be laid on their importance to the student who desires to make any material progress in Geometry. In the Appendix will be found an additional set of somewhat greater difficulty.

Symbols of abbreviation have been used, but to a some

what limited extent; yet wherever practicable the algebraic nomenclature and arrangement have been employed. A list of the symbols used is given on page 4; and on the same page is given an additional set, which are recommended for writing demonstrations on the board or in exercise books.

No originality is claimed for either the matter or arrangement of the book. No material departure from the usual order of topics and propositions has been attempted, and the author has simply endeavored to give in each proof the method which seemed to him the best.
