20 Our soul waiteth for the LORD:

Ile is our help and our shield.

21 For our heart shall rejoice in him,

Because we have trusted in his holy name.

22 Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, According as we hope in thee.

I

LESSON 9.

PSALM XXXIV.

WILL bless the LORD at all times:

His praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: The humble shal! hear thereof, and be glad. 3 Oh magnify the LORD with me,

And let us exalt his name together.

4 I sought the LORD, and he heard me,

And delivered me from all my fears.

5 They looked unto him, and were lightened: And their faces were not ashamed.

6 This poor man cried; and the LORD heard him,

And saved him out of all his troubles.

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him,

And delivereth them.

Oh taste and see that the LORD is good.

Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.

Oh fear the LORD, ye his saints:

For there is no want to them that fear him.

The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger:

But they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.

11 Come, ye children, hearken unto me:

I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

12 What man is he that desireth life,

And loveth many days, that he may see good?

13 Keep thy tonguo from evil,

And thy lips from speaking guile.

14 Depart from evil, and do good;

Seek peace, and pursue it.

15 The

eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, And his ears are open unto their cry.

18

16 The face of the LORD is against them that do evil,
To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth
17 The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth,

And delivereth them out of all their troubles.

8 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart And saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous:

But the LORD delivereth him out of them all

20 He keepeth all his bones :

Not one of them is broken.

21 Evil shall slay the wicked:

And they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.

22 The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants;

And none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.

PSALM XXXVI.

THE transgression of the wicked saith within my heart,
That there is no fear of God before his eyes.
For he flattereth himself in his own eyes,

Until his iniquity be found to be hateful.

2 The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit : He hath left off to be wise, and to do good.

4 He deviseth mischief upon his bed,

He setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorret not evil

5 Thy mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens;

And thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.

Thy righteousness is like the great mountains:
Thy judgments are a great deep:

O LORD, thou preservest man and beast.

How excellent is thy loving kindness, O God!

Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of thy oings.

8 They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy ncuse,

And thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures.

For with thee is the fountain of life:

In thy light shall we see light.

10 Oh continue thy loving kindness unto them that know thee; And thy righteousness to the upright in heart.

11 Let not the foot of pride come against me,

And let not the hand of the wicked remove me.

12 There are the workers of iniquity fallen:

They are cast down, and shall not be able to rise

LESSON 10.

PSALM XXXVII, 1–11, 22–40.

RET not thyself because of evil doers,

PRET

Neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.

2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,

And wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good;

So shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed

4 Delight thyself also in the LORD;

And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

5 Commit thy way unto the LORD;

Trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

6 And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, And thy judgment as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him:

[ocr errors]

Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way.
Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath:

Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.

9 For evil doers shall be cut off:

But those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the eartn. 10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be:

Yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

11 But the meek shall inherit the earth;

And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

22 For such as be blessed of him shall inherit the earth;
And they that be cursed of him shall be cut off.
23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD:
And he delighteth in his way.

24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down
For the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old;

Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. 26 He is ever merciful, and lendeth ;

And his seed is blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell for evermore.

28 For the LORD loveth judgment,

And forsaketh not his saints;

They are preserved forever:

But the seed of the wicked shall be cut off. 29 The righteous shall inherit the land,

And dwell therein forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, And his tongue talketh of judgment.

31 The law of his God is in his heart; None of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watcheth the righteous, And seeketh to slay him.

33 The LORD will not leave him in his band, Nor condemn him when he is judged.

94 Wait on the LORD and keep his way,

[ocr errors]

And he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: When the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see it 35 I have seen the wicked in great power,

And spreading himself like a green bay tree. 38 Yet he passed away, and, lo, he was not:

Yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. 87 Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: For the end of that man is peace.

38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: The end of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: He is their strength in the time of trouble.

40 And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them:

{ He shall deliver them from the wicked,

And save them, because they trust in him.

[blocks in formation]

And thou wilt not deliver him unto the will of his enemies.

8 The LORD will strengthen him upon the bed of languishing: Thou wilt make all his bed in his sickness.

4 I said, LORD, be merciful unto me:

Ileal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

5 Mine enemies speak evil of me,

When shall he die, and his name perish?

6 And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: His heart gathereth iniquity to itself;

{

When he goeth abroad, he telleth it.

7 All that hate me whisper together against me: Against me do they devise my hurt.

8 An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: And now that he lieth he shall rise up no more.

9 Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted,

Which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.

10 But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up,

That I may requite them.

11 By this I know that thou favourest me,

Because mine enemy doth not triumph over me. 12 And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, And settest me before thy face forever.

13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, And to everlasting. Amen and amen.

PSALM XLII.

A

S the hart panteth after the water brooks,
So panteth my soul after thee, O God.

2 My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:
When shall I come and appear before God?

3 My tears have been my meat day and night,

While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

4 When I remember these things I pour out my soul in me:

For I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, With the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.

5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? SHope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him

For the help of his countenance.

6 O my God, my soul is cast down within me: therefore will I remember thee, From the land of Jordan, and of the Hermanites, from the hill Mizar.
