IN THE NAME OF THE Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, THE different Committees appointed to prepare a Book of Worship for the Churches, in connection with the GENERAL SYNOD OF THE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH OF NORTH AMERICA, have endeavored faithfully, and according to the best of their ability, to discharge the duties imposed upon them. The work is, as the title says, a Book of Worship," to be used in public and private devotions; to be a guide both to the ministry and the laity, that all things may be done decently and in order, and that all may be worshippers, not merely in name, but also in truth. Divine worship cannot be performed by proxy; all should participate, all should sing, all should pray; the congregations should be both hearers and doers. This was, this ought always to be, the usage of the Lutheran Church. The Book is not an original work; not a single form, not a single prayer, not even a response is found in it, that is not selected |
