and where they find their own Doctrine and Worship to differ from it in any thing which was then thought material, that they ufe their best Endeavours, and labour by Prayers to God, and Arguments to Men, to get all Things reftored agreeable to that Platform. For my own part, I muft declare, that whatever was then believed effential to the Chriftian Doctrine and Worship, I believe to be fo ftill: Whatever was then the univerfal Practice of all Churches, I am perfuaded ought to be so now. Nor let it be faid, what can a private Bishop or Prieft do in this Cafe? Should he difcover never fo many effential Defects in Doctrine or Worship, his Hands are fo tied by Laws and Canons, that he has it not in his Power to correct the leaft of them. For in fuch a Cafe, that is, in Matters effential to Chriftianity, no Laws or Canons can bind the Confcience; for no Human Authority can make void the Laws of Chrift, or give us a Difpenfation for not obferving them. It is true, a Man may expose himself to Suffering by acting contrary to fuch Laws: But Fear of fuffering for the Truth's fake, whatever may be thought of it in this degenerate Age, never affrighted the Primitive. Chriftians from their Duty. And they conquered by Suffering, and made more Converts by: that Teftimony which they gave to the Truth, by Dying for it, than they could do by Preaching and Writing. So that Sanguis Martyrum eft Semen Ecclefia, The Blood of the Martyrs is the Seed of the Church, became a Proverb. And I doubt not but if it fhould please God to call any Bishop or Prieft, or other pious Chriftian, to fuffer for doing his Endeavour to reftore Primitive Truths, and give him Grace to bear

with Courage and Conftancy whatever may be inflicted on him, it will be fo far from doing any Differvice to thofe Truths, that it will make many Converts to them, and will be a means of propagating them further than they would have reached otherwife. Whatever is effential to Salvation must be had, whatever Hazards we run to obtain it. And therefore if any private Bishop or Prieft find an effential Defect in the Doctrine or Worship of that Church to which he belongs, and has not means to get it amended by publick Authority or Allow ́ance he is obliged to corre& it within his own Cure, whatever Danger he runs by fo doing. And for this reafon, tho' I was fure to ftand alone in the Practice (as I thank God I am not) I would mix Water with the Wine at the Miniftration of the holy Eucharift. I would offer the Euchariftick Bread and Cup to GOD the Father, as the Sacramental or Reprefentative Body and Blood of his SON Jefus Chrift our LORD. And I would alfo pray to GOD the Father to fend the Holy Ghoft upon the Euchariftick Elements, to make them the Body and Blood of CHRIST our SAVIOUR. And I fhall pray for the Faithful departed, that they may reft in Peace, and obtain an happy Refurrection. For I am fully convinced that ALL THESE ARE NECESSARY, PRIMITIVE AND CATHOLICK PARTS OF DIVINE WORSHIP, and therefore that no Human Authority can abolish or difpenfe with our Obligation to the Practice of them. And by GOD's Grace I intend to give my Reafons why I am fo perfuaded, in the Tracts

which are to follow; and in the mean time fhall refer my felf to the Pamphlets lately published by a learned Gentleman, and which I have before mentioned, called, Reafons for reftoring fome Prayers and Directions, as they ftand in the Communion Service of the first reformed Liturgys compiled by the Bishops in the Second and Third Years of the Reign of King Edward VI. and the Defenfe of thofe Reafons:
