Gross is the whole weight of any sort of goods, together with the box, bag, barrel, hogshead, &c. which contains them. Tare is an allowance, made to purchasers, for the weight of the box, bag, barrel, &c. in which goods are packed, and is either at so much in the gross, at so much per box, bag, barrel, &c. or at so much per cent or hundred weight.

Tret is an allowance of 4lb. in every 104 lb. for waste, dust, &c.

Cloff is an allowance of 2 lb. upon every 3 cwt.

Suttle is when part of the allowance is deducted. Neat weight is what remains after all allowances are made. I. When the tare is so much on the gross weight. RULE-Subtract the tare from the gross, and the remainder is the neat.

EXAMPLES.

1. Suppose a factor in the West Indies buys for the use of his employer in New-York, the three following hogsheads of sugar: Required their neat weight?

2. A grocer buys 54 chests of spice, each chest weighing 4 cwt. 2 qrs. 14lb. gross; tare on the whole 21 cwt. 3 qrs. 18 lb. required the neat weight. Ans. 227cwt. 3qrs. 10lb. 3. What is the neat weight of 38 hogsheads James River tobacco, weighing gross 417 cwt. 1 qr. 12 lb. tare on the whole 3982 lb? Ans. 381 cwt. 3 qrs. 6 lb.

II. When the tare is at so much per box, bag, barrel, &c.

RULE-Multiply the number of boxes, &c. by the tare, and subtract the product from the gross, the remainder is the neat. EXAMPLES.

4. In 30 bales of silk, each weighing 317 lb. gross, tare per bale 14 lb. how many pounds neat? Ans. 7050tb.

5. What is the neat weight of 7 frails of raisins, each weighing 3 cwt. 3 qrs. 10 lb. gross, tare at 24lb. per frail ? Ans. 25 cwt. 1qr. 14 lb. 6. What is the neat weight of 14 bags of cotton, each weighing 2 cwt. 2 qrs. 7 lb. tare at 9 lb. per bag? Ans. 34cwt. 3qrs.

III. When the tare is at so much per cwt.

RULE-Divide the gross by the aliquot parts of a cwt. to find the tare, and that subtracted from the gross, leaves the neat weight; or multiply the gross by the tare per cwt. and divide the product by 112, the quotient is the tare, which subtract from the gross, the remainder is the neat.

EXAMPLES.

7. What is the neat weight of 27 barrels of potash, each weighing 302 lb. gross, tare 12 lb. per cwt?

Ans. 7280-40 lb.

8. What is the neat weight of 45 barrels of figs, each 2cwt. 3 qrs. gross, tare 14 lb. per cwt ? Ans. 108 cwt. 1 gr. 31lb.
