O, by all thy pain and woe, Suffer'd once for man below, Bending from thy throne on high, Hear our solemn litany.

2.

By thy birth and early years,
By thy human griefs and fears,
By thy fasting and distress
In the lonely wilderness,
By thy victory in the hour
Of the subtle tempter's power;
Jesus, look with pitying eye;
Hear our solemn litany.

3.

By thy conflict with despair,
By thine agony in prayer,
By the purple robe of scorn,
By thy wounds, thy crown of thorn,
By thy cross, thy pangs and cries,
By thy perfect sacrifice;

Jesus, look with pitying eye;
Hear our solemn litany.

4.

By the bright'ning, heavens above,
By thy finished work of love,
By thy triumph o'er the grave,
By thy power from death to save;
Mighty God, ascended Lord,

To thy throne in heaven restored,
Prince and Saviour, hear our cry,
Hear our solemn litany.

HYMN 19. C. M.

How alas, eh from the Lord:

JOW oft, alas! this wretched heart

How oft my roving thoughts depart, Forgetful of his word!

2.

Yet sovereign mercy calls, "Return;"
Dear Lord, and may I come?
My vile ingratitude I mourn;
O, take the wanderer home.

3.

And canst thou, wilt thou yet forgive,
And bid my crimes remove?
And shall a pardon'd rebel live
To speak thy wondrous love?

4.

Almighty grace, thy healing power,
How glorious, how divine!
That can to life and bliss restore,
So vile a heart as mine.

5.

Thy pardoning love, so free, so sweet,
Dear Saviour, I adore:

O, keep me at thy sacred feet,
And let me rove no more.

HYMN 20. L. M.

THAT load of sin were gone, my

O that I could at last submit

At Jesus' feet to lay it down,
To lay my soul at Jesus' feet.

Rest for my soul I long to find;
Saviour of all, if mine thou art,
Give me thy meek and lowly mind,
And stamp thine image on my heart.

3.

Break off the yoke of inbred sin,
And fully set my spirit free;
I cannot rest till pure within,
Till I am wholly lost in thee.

4.

Fain would I learn of thee, my God;
Thy light and easy burden prove,
The cross, all stain'd with hallow'd blood,
The labor of thy dying love.

5.

I would, but thou must give the power, My heart from every sin release; Bring near, bring near the joyful hour, And fill me with thy perfect peace.

HYMN 21. L. M.

THOU to whose all-searching sight The darkness shineth as the light, Search, prove my heart; it pants for thee, O burst these bonds, and set it free.

2.

Wash out its stains, refine its dross,
Nail my affections to the cross;
Hallow each thought; let all within
Be clean, as thou, my Lord, art clean.

8.

If in this darksome wild I stray,
Be thou my light, be thou my way;
No foes, no violence I fear,

No harm, while thou, my God, art near.

4.

When rising floods my soul o'erflow, When sinks my heart in waves of woe, Jesus, thy timely aid impart,

And raise my head, and cheer my heart.

5.

Saviour, where'er thy steps I see,
Dauntless, untired, I follow thee;
O let thy hand support me still,
And lead me to thy holy hill.

6.

If rough and thorny be the way,
My strength proportion to my day,
Till toil, and grief, and pain shall cease,
Where all is calm, and joy, and peace.

HYMN 22. L. M.

MY God, permit me not to be

A stranger to myself and thee: Amidst a thousand thoughts I rove, Forgetful of my highest love.

2.

Why should my passions mix with earth, And thus debase my heavenly birth? Why should I cleave to things below, And all my purest joys forego?

3.

Call me away from flesh and sense;
Thy grace, O Lord, can draw me thence:
I would obey the voice divine,
And all inferior joys resign.

HYMN 23. H. M.

NEA

JEARER, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee,

E'en though it be a cross
That raiseth me;
Still all my song shall be,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee.

2.

Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I'd be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee.

3.

There let my way appear
Steps unto heaven;
All that thou sendest me
In mercy given;

Angels to beckon me

Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee.
