3.

When first before his mercy-seat
Thou didst to him thy all commit;
He gave thee warrant, from that hour,
To trust his wisdom, love, and power.

4.

Did ever trouble yet befall,
And he refuse to hear thy call?
And has he not his promise past,
That thou shalt overcome at last?

5.

Though rough and thorny be the road,
It leads thee home, apace to God;
Then count thy present trials small,
For heaven will make amends for all.

HYMN 227. L. M.

AITH is the Christian's evidence Of things unseen by mortal eye; It passes all the bounds of sense, And penetrates the inmost sky.

2.

Things absent it can set in view,

And bring far distant prospects home; Events long past it can renew,

And long foresee the things to come.

3.

With strong persuasion, from afar
The heavenly region it surveys,
Embraces all the blessings there,
And here enjoys the promises.

By faith a steady course we steer, Through ruffling storms and swelling

seas,

O'ercome the world, keep down our fear, And still possess our souls in peace.

5.

By faith we pass the vale of tears,
Safe and serene, though oft distress'd;
By faith, subdue the king of fears,
And go rejoicing to our rest.

HYMN 228. C. M.

EE, in the vineyard of the Lord,
A barren fig-tree stands;
No fruit it yields, no blossom bears,
Though planted by his hands.

2.

From year to year the tree he views,
And still no fruit is found:

Then "cut it down," the Lord commands, "Why cumbers it the ground?"

3.

But lo! the gracious Saviour pleads,
"The barren fig-tree spare,
Another year in mercy wait,
It yet may bloom and bear:

4.

"But if my culture prove in vain, And still no fruit be found,

I plead no more; destroy the tree,
And root it from thy ground."

THE

HYMN 229. C. M.

HE head that once was crown'd with thorns,

Is crown'd with glory now; A royal diadem adorns

The mighty Victor's brow..

2.

The highest place that heaven affords,
Is to our Jesus given;

The King of kings, and Lord of lords,
He reigns o'er earth and heaven.

3.

The joy of all who dwell above,
The joy of all below,

To whom he manifests his love,
And grants his name to know.

4.

To them the cross, with all its shame,
With all its grace, is given;
Their name, an everlasting name,
Their joy, the joy of heaven.

5.

They suffer with their Lord below,
They reign with him above;
Their everlasting joy to know
The myst❜ry of his love.

HYMN 230. 8s, 7s, 4s. ORD, dismiss us with thy blessing, Fill our hearts with joy and peace; Let us each, thy love possessing, Triumph in redeeming grace: O refresh us,

Traveling through this wilderness.

2.

Thanks we give, and adoration,
For thy gospel's joyful sound;
May the fruits of thy salvation
In our hearts and lives abound!
Ever faithful

To the truth may we be found.

3.

So whene'er the signal's given,
Us from earth to call away,
Borne on angels' wings to heaven,
Glad the summons to obey,
May we ever

Reign with Christ in endless day.

DOXOLOGY. L. M.

PRAISE God from whom all blessings

flow;

Praise him all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen.
