cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized 14 of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized 15 of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto

upon the trees of the field, and upon the fruit of the ground; and it shall burn, and shall not be quenched. Je. vii. 20. But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the Sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched. Je. xvii. 27. Say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the Lord: Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I will kindle a fire in thee, and it shall devour every green tree in thee, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burnt therein. And all flesh shall see that I the Lord have kindled it: it shall not be quenched. Ez. xx. 47, 48. Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the Devil and his angels. Mat. xxv. 41. If thy hand offend thee (said Jesus), cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, &c. Mar. ix. 43 49. See chap. xiii. 42; xxv. 41. 13 From Galilee to Jordan.] When "he" ("Joseph") heard that Archelaus did reign in Judea, in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee. Mat. ii. 22. And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. Mar. i. 9. Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove, and a voice came from heaven which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. Lu. iii. 21, 22.

14 John for bad him.] And whence is this to me? (said Elizabeth,) that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Lu. i. 43. Peter said unto "him" ("Jesus"), Lord, dost thou wash my feet? Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. John xiii. 6, 7, 8.

I have need to be baptized.] See chap. iii. 6. Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. John i. 16. Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into

his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. John iii. 3-7. Abide in me, and I in you, as the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine, no more can ye, except ye abide in me. Without me ye can do nothing. John xv. 4, 5. John truly baptized with water; but ye (said Jesus to his disciples) shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me, both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth. Ac. i. 5-8. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree. Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins. Ac. v. 30, 31. The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all.) Ac. x. 36. All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God. Ro. iii. 23, 24, 25. The Scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe: for as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Ga. iii. 22. 27. 29. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Ga. iv. 6. Among "whom" ("the children of disobedience") also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ. (By grace are ye saved.) Ep. ii. 3, 4, 5. After this, I beheld,

him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him. And Jesus, when he was 16 baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God

and lo, a great multitude which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; and cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple; and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of them shall feed them, and lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. Re. vii. 9, 10. 13-17.

15 Suffer it to be so now.] Jesus answered and said unto him (Peter), What I do (in washing thy feet) thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. Simon Peter saith unto him, Not my feet only, but also my hands, and my head. John xiii. 7, 8, 9.

For thus it becometh us.] Then said I, Lo, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart. Ps. xl. 7, 8. The Lord is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. Is. xlii. 21. They were both righteous (to wit, Zacharias and Elizabeth) before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. Lu. i. 6. Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John iv. 34. He that sent me (said Jesus) is with me: the Father hath not left me alone, for I do always those things that please him. John viii. 29. I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. John xiii. 15. If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love: even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. John xv. 10. But (Christ) made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men; and being found in fashion as a man, he hum

bled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phi. ii. 7, 8. Such an High Priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens. He. vii. 26. Because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps; who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth. Who when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not, but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously; who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to sins should live unto righteousness; by whose stripes ye were healed. 1 Pe. ii. 21-24. He that saith he abideth in him, ought himself also so to walk as he walked. 1 John ii. 6.

16 Jesus when he was baptized, &c.] And straightway (Jesus) coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him, &c. Mar. i. 10.

And, lo, the heavens, &c.] It came to pass in the thirtieth year (said Ezekiel), in the fourth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I was among the captives, by the river Chebar, that the heavens were opened, and I saw visions of God. Ezek. i. 1. When all the people were baptized (by John), it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened. Lu. iii. 21. But he (Stephen) being full of the Holy Ghost, said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Ac. vii. 56.

And he saw the Spirit, &c.] The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him; the spirit of wisdom and understanding; the spirit of counsel and might; the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. Is. xi. 2. hold my servant whom I uphold; mine elect in whom my soul delighteth. I have put my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. Is. xlii. 1. As for me, this is my covenant with "them" ("that turn from transgression in Jacob"), saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee (the Redeemer), and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed's seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever. Is. lix. 21. The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. Is. lxi. 1. The Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape,

17 descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

CHAPTER IV.

1 THEN was Jesus led up of the spirit into the wilderness to be

like a dove upon "him" ("Jesus"), and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. Lu. iii. 22. I knew him not (said John of Jesus), but that he should be made manifest to Israel; therefore am I come baptizing with water. And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw and bare record that this is the Son of God. John i. 31-34. He whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God; for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. John iii. 34. He (Jesus) is the head of the body, the Church who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell. Col. i. 18, 19.

Lo a voice from heaven.] The Father himself (said Jesus), which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time nor seen his shape. John v. 37. Father, glorify thy name (said Jesus). Then came there a voice from heaven saying, I have glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered; others said, An angel spake to him: Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. John xii. 28, 29, 30. I heard a voice from heaven (said St. John) as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder, and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps (as the Lamb stood on the mount of Sion). Re. xiv. 2.

This is my beloved Son.] Behold, my servant whom I have chosen: my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. Mat. xii. 18. Whilst he (Jesus) yet spake (in the transfiguration), behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him. Mat. xvii. 5. I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee. Ps. ii. 7. Behold, my servant whom I uphold, mine elect in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. The Lord is well

pleased for his righteousness' sake, he will magnify the law and make it honourable. Is. xlii. 1. 21. And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mar. i. 11. And there was a cloud which overshadowed “them” ("Jesus, Peter, James, and John," at the transfiguration), and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Mar. ix. 7. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased. Lu. iii. 22. And there came a voice out of the cloud (on the mount of transfiguration), saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. Lu. ix. 35. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath chosen us, &c. to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the Beloved. Ep. i. 6. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Col. i. 13. For "he" ("Jesus") received from God the Father, honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. 2 Pe. i. 17. See chap. xxi. 37.

CHAP. IV.-1 Was Jesus, &c.] And immediately the spirit driveth him into the wilderness; and he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him. Mar. i. 12, 13. Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost, returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. Lu. iv. 1. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Ro. viii. 14.

Of the spirit.] And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from thee (said Obadiah to Elijah), that the spirit of the Lord shall carry thee whither I know not: and so when I come and tell Ahab, and he cannot find thee, he shall slay me: but I thy servant fear the Lord from my youth. 1 Ki. xviii. 12. And "they" ("the sons of the prophets") said unto him (Elisha), Behold, now there be with thy servants fifty strong men; let them go, we pray thee, and seek thy "master" ("Elijah"): lest peradventure the Spirit of the Lord hath taken him up, and cast him upon some mountain, or into some valley. 2 Ki. ii. 16. Then the spirit took me up,

tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and 2 forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. And when the 3 tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, com

and I heard behind me a voice of a great rushing, saying, Blessed be the glory of the Lord from his place. So the spirit lifted me up, and took me away, and I went in bitterness in the heat of my spirit; but the hand of the Lord was strong upon me. Ez. iii. 12. 14. And he (the vision of God) put forth the form of an hand, and took me by a lock of mine head and the spirit lifted me up between the earth and the heaven, and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem. Ex. viii. 3. Moreover, the spirit lifted me up, and brought me unto the east gate of the Lord's house, which looketh eastward. Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity. Ez. xi. 24. In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was as the frame of a city on the south. Ez. xl. 2. So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. Ez. xliii. 5. And when they (Philip and the eunuch) were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. Ac. viii. 39.

To be tempted of the devil.] I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed: it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Ge. iii. 15. Hereafter I will not talk much with you; for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me. John xiv. 30. For in that he himself (Christ) hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. He. ii. 18. We have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. He. iv. 15, 16. 2 Fasted forty days, &c.] Moses went into the midst of the cloud (on mount Sinai), and gat him up into the mount: and Moses was in the mount forty days and forty nights. Ex. xxiv. 18. And Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did neither eat bread nor drink water. Ex. xxxiv. 28. When I was gone up into the mount (said Moses), to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the Lord made with you (Israel), then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water. And I fell down before the Lord, as at the first, forty days and forty nights; I did neither eat bread nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned. Thus I fell

down before the Lord forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the Lord had said he would destroy you. De. ix. 9. 18. 25. I will raise them up a prophet from among their brethren like unto thee (Moses), and will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. De. xviii. 18. And he (Elijah) arose, and did eat and drink, and went (being threatened by Jezebel) in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God. 1 Ki. xix. 8. And (Jesus) was led by the spirit into the wilderness, being forty days tempted of the devil: and in those days he did eat nothing. Lu. iv. 2.

He was afterward an hungred.] Now in the morning, as he (Jesus) returned unto the city (of Bethany), he hungered. Mat. xxi. 18. And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry. Mar. xi. 12. Now Jacob's well was there (at Sychar): Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well. John iv. 6. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also "himself" ("Jesus") likewise took part of the same; that, through death, he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren; that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people: for in that he himself had suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them that are tempted. He. ii. 14. 17. 18.

But put

3 The tempter came to him.] Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought? hast thou not made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side, &c.? forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. Job i. 9-12. And Satan answered the Lord, and said, Skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life but put forth thine hand now, and touch his bone, and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face. And the Lord said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life. So went Satan forth from the presence of the Lord, and smote Job with sore boils, from the sole of his feet unto his crown. Job ii. 4-7. And the Lord said (unto Peter), Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat; but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. Lu. xxii. 31, 32. For this cause,

But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every

when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith (by sending Timothy), lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain. 1 Th. iii. 5. Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer (said John to the churches of Ephesus): behold, the devil shall cast some of you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation ten days; be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown of life. Re. ii. 10. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpant, called the devil and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice, saying in heaven, Now is come salvation and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death. Re. xii. 9, 10, 11.

If thou be the Son of God.] And lo a voice (was heard) from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Mat. iii. 17. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple; and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence. Lu. iv. 3. 9.

Command that these stones.] Now the serpent was more subtile than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made: and he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? ye shall not surely die (though ye eat of it, the tree in the midst of the garden): for God doth know, that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened: and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. Ge. iii. 1-5. And Jacob sod pottage; and Esau came from the field, and was faint: and Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birth-right. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall this birth-right do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him and he sold his birth-right unto Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; thus Esau despised his birth-right. Ge. xxv. 29-34. And the children of Israel said unto "them" ("Moses and Aaron"), Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh-pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth

into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger. Ex. xvi. 3. And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all, besides this manna, before our eyes. Nu. xi. 4. 6. And they sinned yet more against him, by provoking the most high in the wilderness. And they tempted God in their heart, by asking meat for their lust; yea, they spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness? Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people Ps. lxxviii. 17

-20. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord; lest there be any fornicator or profane person, as Esau, who, for one morsel of meat, sold his birth-right. He. xii. 14. 16.

4 It is written.] See verses 7. 10. And Jesus answered him (Satan), saying, It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt wor ship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Lu. iv. 4. 8. 12. Whatsoever things were written aforetime, were written for our learning, that we, through patience and comfort of the Scriptures, might have hope. Ra. xv. 4. Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. Ep. vi. 17.

Man shall not live, &c.] And he humbled thee (said Moses to Israel), and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know, that he might make thee know, that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. De. viii. 3. It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. Lu. iv. 4.

But by every word, &c.] Jesus said (unto his disciples), They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves and two fishes (to feed such a multitude). He said, Bring them hither to me; and he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude; and they did all eat, and were filled; and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full: and they that had eaten were about five thousand men, besides women and children. Mat. xiv. 16-21. And Moses said, This shall be, when the Lord
