and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. 10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his 11 wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given. For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs

commonly, that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife. 1 Co. v. 1.

Doth commit adultery.] Pharaoh called Abram and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? Why didst thou not tell me that she (Sarai) was thy wife? why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife. Now, therefore, behold thy wife, take her and go thy way. Ge. xii. 18, 19. God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead man; for the woman (Sarah) which thou hast taken, for she is a man's wife! Ge. xx. 3. They (of Judah) say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him and become another man's, shall he return unto her again? Shall not that land be greatly polluted ? But thou hast played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again unto me, saith the Lord. Je. iii. 1. The woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then, if while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress. But if her husband be dead, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. Ro. vii. 2. 3.

10 If the case of the man be so.] The Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him. Ge. ii. 18. Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets; let them be only thine own, and our strangers with thee; let thy fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe. 15-19. Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord. Pr. xviii. 22. A foolish son is the calamity of his father, and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the Lord. Pr. xix. 13, 14. It is better to dwell in a corner of the house-top, than with a brawling woman in a wide house. It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and an angry woman. xxi. 9. 19. Let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Co. vii. 2. I say, therefore, to the unmar

ried and widows, It is good for them if they abide even as I. Art thou bound unto a wife! seek not to be loosed. Art thou loosed from a wife? seek not a wife; but and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned. He that is unmarried careth for the things that belong to the Lord, how he may please the Lord; but he that is married careth for the things that are of the world, how he may please his wife. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy, both in body and in spirit but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please her husband. And this I speak for your own profit; not that I may cast a snare upon you, but for that which is comely, and that ye may attend upon the Lord without distraction The wife is bound by the law, as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord. But she is happier if she so abide, after my judgment; and I think also that I have the Spirit of God. I Co. vii. 8. 27, 28. 32-35. 39, 40. In the latter times, some shall depart from the faith, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats. Ti. iv. 3. The younger widows refuse (to take into the number of those provided for by the Church), for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith. And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tatlers also and busy-bodies, speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after Satan. 1 Ti. v. 11-15.

11 All men cannot receive this saying.] I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner, and another after that But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. But as God hath distributed to every man, as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk. And so ordain I in all churches. And this I speak for your own profit. 1 Co. vii. 7. 9. 17. 35.

For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs that keep my sabbaths, and choose the things that please me, and take hold of my covenant; Even unto them will I give in mine house, and within my walls, a place and a name better than of sons and of daughters. Which have made themselves eunuchs.] See verse 10. Have we not power to lead about a sister, a wife, as well as other apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas? They which preach the Gospel should live of the Gospel. But I have used none of these 1༔ things, neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me. For it were better for me to die than that any man should make my glorying void. 1 Co. ix. 5. 15. 13 Brought unto him little children.] See chap. xviii. 2. And it came to pass after these things, that one told Joseph, Behold, thy father is sick and he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. And Joseph said unto his father, They are my sons, whom God hath given me in this place. And he said, Bring them, I pray thee, unto me, and I will bless them. And Israel stretched out his right hand, and laid it upon Ephraim's head, who was younger, and his left hand upon Manasseh's head, guiding his hands wittingly; for Manasseh was the firstborn. And he blessed Joseph, and said, God, before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac I did walk; the God which fed me all my life long unto this day; the angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads. And he blessed them that day, saying, In thee shall Israel bless, saying, God make thee as Ephraim and as Manasseh. And he set Ephraim before Manasseh. Ge. xlviii. 1-20. And when she (Hannah) had weaned him (Samuel), she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh; and the child was young. 1 Sa. i. 24. The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children. Ye are blessed of the Lord, which made heaven and earth. Ps. cxv. 14, 15. I will give them (of Judah, saith God) one heart, and one way, that they may fear me for ever, for the good of them and their children after them. Je. xxxii. 39. They brought young children to him, that he should touch them; and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. Mar. x. 13. And they brought unto him also infants, that he would VOL. II.

The promise (said Peter to the Jews) is unto you and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Ac. ii. 39. The unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife; and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; else were your children unclean, but now are they holy. 1 Co. vii. 14.

And the disciples rebuked them.] See chap. xvi. 22. The multitude rebuked "them" ("the two blind men"), because they should hold their peace. Mat. xx. 31. Master (said John), we saw one casting out Devils in thy name, and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not; for he that is not against us is for us. And when his disciples James and John saw "this" ("that the Samaritans did not receive him"), they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, even as Elias did? But he turned and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of Lu. ix. 49, 50. 54, 55.

14 Suffer little children, &c.] I will establish my covenant between me and thee (said God to Abraham), and thy seed after thee in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. And Abraham was ninety years old and nine when he was circumcised. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised. the self-same day was Abraham circumcised and Ishmael his son. Ge. xvii. 7, 8. 24. 26. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac, being eight days old, as God had commanded him. Ge. xxi. 4. The woman came and told her husband (Manoah), A man of God said unto me, Thou shalt conceive and bear a son. And now drink no wine, nor strong drink, neither eat any unclean thing; for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death. Ju. xiii. 6, 7. And "she" (“Hannah") vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look upon the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man-child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life; and there shall no razor come upon his head. And the Lord remembered her. And the nian Elkanah and all his house went A a

and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom 15 of heaven. And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence. 16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what 17 good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said

up to offer unto the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow. But Hannah went not up; for she said unto her husband, I will not go up until the child be weaned, and then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and there abide for ever. And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, and brought him unto the house of the Lord in Shiloh, and the child was young. 1 Sa. i. 11. 19. 22. 24. Samuel ministered before the Lord, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. 1 Sa. ii. 18. Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Mar. x. 14. See Lu. xviii. 16.

For of such is the kingdom of heaven.] See chap. xi. 25; xviii. 3. Brethren, be not children in understanding; howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men. 1 Co. xiv. 20. Wherefore, laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil-speakings, as new-born babes desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby. 1 Pe. ii. 1, 2.

15 He laid his hands on them, &c.] He shall feed his flock like a shepherd; he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young. Is. xl. 11. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. Mar. x. 16. Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you, for him hath God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. John vi. 27, 28, 29. Sirs (said the gaoler of Philippi to Paul

Eternal life.] These (the wicked) shall go away into everlasting punishment; but the righteous into life eternal. Mat. xxv. 46. Many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake; some to everlasting life, and some to shame, and everlasting contempt. Da. xii. 2. So (as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness) must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. Joha iii. 14, 15.

Whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him, shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him, shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. John iv. 14. Search the Scrip tures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life; and they are they which testify of me. John v. 39. He that believeth on me (said Christ) hath everlasting life. John xii. 25. As thou hast given him (said Jesus to his heavenly Father) power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. To them who, by patient continuance in well-doing seek for glory, and honour, and immortality (God will render) eternal life. Ro. ii. 7. Where sin abounded grace did much more abound. That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life, by Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. v. 20, 21. Now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Ro. vi. 22. 23. For this cause I obtained mercy ( Paul), that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. 1 Ti. i. 16. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life. 1 John ii. 25. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. 1 John v. 11, 12, 13. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true; and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ; this is the true God, and eternal life. 1 John v. 20. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Jude 21. But if thou wilt enter into life.] Ye shall keep my statutes and my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them; I am the Lord. Le. xviii. 5. I gave them my statutes, and shewed them my judgments, which if a man do, he shall even live in them. Moreover, also I gave them my sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord that sanctify them. Ez. xx. 11, 12. What is written in the law (said Jesus to the lawyer who tempted him, saying, What shall I do to inherit eternal life?)? How readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live. Lu. x. 26, 27, 28. Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, that the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Ro. x. 5. That no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident; for the just shall live by faith. And the law is not of faith; but the man that doeth them shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. For it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree. Ga. ili. 11, 12, 13.

18 Which?] As many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. Ga. iii. 10. Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all; for he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now, if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. Ja. ii. 10, 11.

Thou shalt do no murder.] See chap. v. 21-28. Honour thy father, and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill.

Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. Ex. xx. 12-17. Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee, that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. Neither shalt thou commit adultery. Neither shalt

19 steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from 21 my youth up: what lack I yet? Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt

thou steal. Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour. Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife. Neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his man-servant, or his maid-servant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's. De. v. 16-21. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. Mar. x. 19. Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. Lu. xviii. 20. Owe no man any thing, but to love one another; for he that loveth another, hath fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet. And if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour, therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. Ro. xiii. 8, 9, 10.

19 Honour thy father and thy mother.] See chap. xv. 4, 5, 6. Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths. Le. xix. 3. The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it. Pr. xxx. 17. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honour thy father and mother (which is the first commandment with promise). Ep. vi. 1, 2.

Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.] The second (commandment) is like unto it (the first), Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Mat. xxii. 39. Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people; but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Le. xix. 18. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. Lu. x. 27. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ro. xiii. 9. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Ga. v. 14. If ye fulfil the royal law according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well. Ja. ii. 8.

20 All these things have I kept, &c.] Master, all these have I observed from my youth. Mar. x. 20. I say unto you, that joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons which need no repentance. Lu. vii, 7.

Nay, father Abraham (said the rich man, being in torments), if one went unto "them” (“his brethren") from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rose from the dead. Lu xvi. 30, 31. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself; God, I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. All these (commandments) have I kept (said the ruler) from my youth up. L xviii. 11, 12. 21. He that is without sin among you (said Jesus to them who brought unto him a woman taken in adultery), let him first cast a stone at her. John viii. 7. Now we know that what things soever the law saith it saith to them who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteous

ness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ, unto all, and upon all them that believe, for there is no difference, for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. Ro. iii. 19-23. I was alive without the law once; but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. Ro. vii. 9. The law was our schoolmaster te bring us unto Christ, that we might be justi fied by faith. Ga. iii. 24. Touching the righteousness which is in the law (said Paul, I was) blameless. Phi. iii. 6.

What lack I yet?] One thing thou lackest (said Jesus to the young man that was very rich), go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow me. Mar. x. 21. Yet lackest thou one thing, sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me. Lu. xviii. 22.

21 If thou wilt be perfect.] See chap. x. 19, 20. 48. Noah was a just man, and per fect in his generation, and Noah walked with God. Ge. vi. 9. Walk before me (said the Lord to Abram), and be thou perfect. Gr. xvii. 1. There was a man in the land of l'1, whose name was Job, and that man was perfect, and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. Job i. 1.
