21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

PSALM XVIII.

David praiseth God for his manifold and marvellous blessings.

spake unto the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD deli- *2 Sam, xxii. vered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul: And

5 The § sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares Or, cords. of death prevented me.

6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.

8 There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and fire | Heb. by his. out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it.

9 He bowed the heavens also, and came down and darkness was under his feet.

10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind.

11 He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. 12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire.

13 The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

14 Yea, he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them.

15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of the breath of thy nostrils.

16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters.

17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.

18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my stay.

19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

20 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.

21 For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not wickedly departed from my God.

SECTION XII.

David numbers the People.

2 SAMUEL XXIV. VER. 1-10.

1 65 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Satan, See Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

1 Chro. xxi. 1.

2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which Or, Compass. was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

4 Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5¶And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the || Or, valley. || river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

* Or, nether land newly inhabited.

6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon. 7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.

8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

65 David's motive for numbering his people was pride of heart. It is curious "God to observe the different phraseology of Scripture: in this verse it says, moved him;" in another part, that Satan provoked him; and it is again decid edly spoken of as his own act, for which he was not only accountable, but punished.
