Lineage.

1. JOHN WARNER, esq. of Parham, in Suffolk, son of Francis Warner, esq. of Parham, by Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of Sir John Rous, knt. of Henham, and a lineal descendant of the ancient family of Warner, of Warner's Hall, in Great Waltham, Essex, was created a BARONET in 1660. He m. Trevor, daughter of Sir Thomas Hanmer, bart. of Hanmer, and had two daughters, who both took the veil. At Sir John's decease the title became EXTINCT.

1643, and having Frances, grandaughter and heir of Edward Sutton, Lord Dudley, was created BARON WARD, of Birmingham; from his marriage descended the Lords Dudley and Ward, &c.

1. FRANCIS WARRE, esq. of Hestercombe, in the parish of Kingston, in the county of Somerset, created a BART. in 1673, was only son of Sir John Warre, knt. M.P. for the county of Somerset, who died in 1669, by Unton, daughter of Sir Francis Hawley, of BucklandSororum, bart. (afterwards Baron Hawley, in the kingdom of Ireland; descended by his mother and grandmother from the Portmans, of Orchard-Portman, and the Lords Poulet of Hinton St. George.) Sir Francis Warre, in his early years was a captain in the Duke of Monmouth's own regiment, but upon his marriage he retired: he was also colonel of the Taunton regiment, vice-admiral of Somersetshire and the port of Bristol, a deputy lieutenant, in the commission of the peace, and M. P. for the boroughs of Bridgewater and Taunton in various parliaments to the year 1716. He twice married: first, Anne, daughter and heir of Robert Cuffe, esq. of Creech St. Michael, by whom he had one son, who served as a captain of dragoons, and died at Ghent, in Flanders, in the thirtythird year of his age; and secondly, Margaret, daughter of John Harbin, merchant of London, of a family of that name near Yeovil, in the county of Somerset, by whom he had

MARGARET.

Sir Francis died 1st December, 1718, and was buried with his ancestors in the family vault at Kingston. He was heir to Kentisbere, Meriet, Atwood, Percehaye, Clavile, Combe, Chipleigh, St. Barbe, and Cuffe, whose arms he quartered with his own. At his decease the BARONETCY became EXTINCT; but Hestercombe and the other estates of which he died seized devolved upon his only surviving child and heiress,

MARGARET WARRE, who married John Bampfylde, younger and only brother of Sir Coplestone Warwick Bampfylde, of Poltimore, in the county of Devon, bart. The first wife of John Bampfylde, esq. was Elizabeth, daughter of Basset, esq. of Heanton Court, in the county of Devon, by whom he had no issue. He was representative in parliament first for the county of Devon, which he gave up to his nephew, Sir Richard Warwick Bampfylde, bart. when he came of age, and after that for the city of Exeter. He was born 8th April, 1690, and died 17th September, 1750, and is buried at Kingston. By his second wife, Margaret, the heiress of Hestercombe, he had issue,

This lady had been married before to John Malet, of Enmore, by whom she had issue an only daughter and heir, Elizabeth, m. to John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester. + His first wife was Vere, third daughter of the Hon. and Rev. Robert Booth, S. T. P. dean of Bristol, fifth 4 B

ed to the Hestercombe estates: of whom presently.

Margaretta, who married, as second wife, 31st December, 1753, George Tyndale,+ esq. of Bathford, in the county of Somerset, lineally descended from the feudal Barons de Tyndale, in South Tyne-dale, in the county of Northumberland (see BURKE's Commoners), and died in December, 1792, leaving issue, JOHN, who pursuant to the will of his Warre maternal uncle, Coplestone Bampfylde, esq. became possessed of the Hestercombe and other estates, and assumed the name of WARRE after that of Tyndale (vide infra).

George Tyndale, esq. of Bathford, died in 1771, and was buried at Bathford. COPLESTONE WARRE BAMPFYLDE, only son of Margaret, the heiress of Hestercombe, m. Mary, second daughter of Edward Knight, esq. of Woolverley, in the county of Worcester, but had no issue. He was for many years colonel of the Somersetshire militia, and in the commission of the peace. He died 29th August, 1791, and bequeathed Hestercombe and his other estates to his nephew and heir-at-law, John Tyndale, on condition of his assuming the name of WARRE. This

JOHN TYNDALE WARRE, eldest son of George Tyndale, esq. aforesaid, by his second wife, Margaretta Bampfylde, was possessed of Hestercombe upon the death of his uncle, and took the name of WARRE. He was born in 1756, and married 10th January, 1789, Elizabeth, only child and heiress of John Farell, esq. late of Bristol, by whom he had an only daughter and heiress, ELIZABETH

EDWARD BORLACE, esq. m. first, the third daughter of Sir Michael Dormer, knt. but that lady died issueless. He wedded, secondly, Miss Jane Hudleston, and by her had two sons, namely,

CATHARINE, bapt. 14th October, 1568.

He was buried at Little Marlow, 22nd August,

SIR JOHN BORLACE, who was created a BARONET 4th May, 1642. This gentleman was a conspicuous member of the administration of Ireland, and was for some time one of the lords justices of that kingdom. He was afterwards, during the civil war, voted a delinquent, and compounded for his estate by paying £2400. He d. in August, 1672, and was s. by his only

son,

I. SIR JOHN-BORLACE WARREN, G. C. B. an admiral in the royal navy, distinguished for his high professional abilities and valour, was created a BARONET ist June, 1775. He was afterwards sworn of the privy council, and accredited ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the court of Russia. He married Caroline, daughter of General Sir John Clavering, K.C.B. and had (with a son, killed at the landing of

the Bristol troops in Egypt) an only surviving daugh. ter and heir,

FRANCIS-MARY, m. to George Charles, fourth Lord
Vernon, and was mother of the present (1838)
Lord.

Sir John was M.P. for Marlow in 1774 and 1780, and subsequently for Nottingham. He d. in 1822, when the BARONETCY became EXTINCT.

SIR WILLIAM GASTENEYS, father of another SIR WILLIAM GASTENEYS, who had two sons, both of the same name, viz.*

WILLIAM (Sir), the elder, had free warren in Brasinburgh and Carleby, in the county of Lincoln; Garthrop, in Leicestershire; and Colton, in Staffordshire, 48 HENRY III. His wife's name was Constance, and by her he left a son and heir,

JOHN (Sir), who m. Isabella, daughter of German Hay, of Acton, in the county of York, and had two sons,

WILLIAM (Sir), and John, rector of the church of Cranweys, who was living 10 EDWARD III. The elder,

WILLIAM (Sir), m. the daughter of Sir John Brett, of Norfolk, and was s. by his son,

THOMAS (Sir), living 18 EDWARD III. who m. Johanna, daughter of John Toly, of Wymondham, and left a daughter, his heir,

THOMASINE, who m. Sir Nicholas Greseley, knt. of Drakelow, in Derbyshire, and conveyed Colton and other lands, in Staffordshire, to the Gresleys.

In the memorandums of BURWASH, bishop of Lincoln, is mentioned, that in 1324, the French king, CHARLES the Fair, threatening to invade England, EDWARD II. appoints Sir Robert de Hercy and Sir William

EDMOND GASTNEIS, who purchased the manor of Totwick, in the county of York, from Sir John Hor bury, knt. in the 28th of EDWARD I. and had a charter of warren from the crown, in the said manor, with the advowson of the church. His eldest son,

SIR HARDOLPH de WastneIS, knt. was summoned in the 9th of EDWARD III. with others, to a council in the West Riding of the county of York. He m. twice, but leaving no issue, was s. by his brother,

SIR EDMOND DE WASTNEIS, knt. great-grandfather of JOHN WASTNEIS, Lord of Headon, in Nottinghamshire, who was returned amongst the gentry of that county, 12 HENRY VI. His son and heir,

ROBERT WASTNEIS, held in Headon and Ousthrop, in the county of Nottinghamshire, two knights' fees, about the time of EDWARD IV. He m. Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Nelson, of Yorkshire, merchant of the staple, and was s. by his son,

EDWARD WATSON, esq. of Rockingham Castle, in the county of Northampton, married Dorothy, daughter of the lord chief justice, Sir Edward Montagu, knt, and left a son and heir,

SIR EDWARD WATSON, of Rockingham Castle, who was sheriff of Northamptonshire in the 34th of ELIZABETH, and received the honour of knighthood in 1603. He married Anne, daughter of Kenelm Digby, esq. of Dry Stoke, and dying in 1616, was s. by his eldest son, 1. LEWIS WATSON, esq. of Rockingham Castle, who was created a BARONET 18th December, 1621. Sir Lewis was sheriff of Northamptonshire in the 9th of CHARLES I. and having zealously adhered to the king in the civil war, was raised to the peerage, as Baron Rockingham, in 1645. He married first, the Honourable Catherine Bertie, daughter of Peregrine, Lord Willoughby de Eresby, but by her ladyship had no surviving issue. His second wife was Eleanor, daughter of Sir George Manners, knt. of Haddon, in the county of Derby, and by her he had, with three daughters, an only son, his successor, at his decease, 29th January, 1652.

II. SIR EDWARD WATSON, second Lord Rockingham, who married Lady Anne Wentworth, daughter of Sir Thomas Wentworth, the eminent but unfortunate Earl of Strafford, and co-heir of her brother, William, second Earl, (refer to BURKE'S Extinct Peerage,) and dying in 1691, was s. by his eldest son, III. SIR LEWIS WATSON, third Lord Rockingham,

who married Catherine, daughter and heir of George Sondes, Earl of Feversham, and was in consequence created Viscount Sondes, of Lees Court, in Kent, and Earl of Rockingham. He d. 19th March, 1724, and was s. by his grandson,

IY. SIR LEWIS WATSON, Second Earl of Rockingham, who married Anne, daughter of Sir Henry Furnese, bart. of Waldershare, but dying s. p. in 1745, was §. by his brother,

V. SIR THOMAS WATSON, third Earl of Rockingham, who died unm, 26th February, 1746, when all the honours, save the Barony and BARONETCY, became extinct, but those devolved upon his cousin,

VI. SIR THOMAS WATSON-WENTWORTH, (the latter assumed under the will of William Wentworth, second Earl of Strafford, who devised Sir Thomas his estates upon that condition,) was created in 1728, Earl of Malton, &c. and in 1746, Marquess of Rockingham. He married Lady Mary Finch, fourth daughter of Daniel, Earl of Winchelsea and Nottingham, and had issue,

ANNE, m. in 1744, to William, Earl Fitz William,
and was grandmother of the present earl.
MARY, m. in 1746, to John Milbanke, esq. son of
Sir Ralph Milbanke, bart.

He d. 14th December, 1750, and was s. by his son,

VII. SIR CHARLES WATSON-Wentworth, second Marquess of Rockingham, K.G. an eminent statesman and PRIME MINISTER, at one time, in the reign of GEORGE III. His lordship married Mary, daughter and heir of Thomas Bright, esq. of Badsworth, in the county of York, but died s. p. 1st July, 1782, when all his honours, including the BARONETCY, became EXTINCT, while the principal part of the Wentworth estates devolved upon his nephew, William, late Earl Fitzwilliam.
