ELIZABETH TEMPEST, who wedded Thomas Plumbe, son and heir of William Plumbe, esq. of Wavertree Hall, and of Aughton, both in the county of Lancaster, and had a numerous family, of whom, her eldest son and heir, having assumed the additional surname and arms of Temple, is the present (1838)

1. SIR WILLIAM TEMPLE, (elder brother of Sir John Temple, speaker of the Irish House of Commons, ancestor of the VISCOUNTS PALMERSTON,) had a reversionary grant, after his father's decease, of the Mastership of the Rolls. He was created a BARONET 31st January, 1665, and sworn of the privy council. Sir William established a very high reputation for learning and abilities, and his writings on various subjects are greatly esteemed. He m. Dorothy, second daughter of Sir Peter Osborn, and had an only son,

I. FISHER TENCH, esq. of Low Leyton, in Essex, (only surviving son of Nathaniel Tench, esq. of Low Leyton, who died 2nd April, 1710, aged seventy-eight,) served the office of sheriff of Essex in 1712, and was created a BARONET 8th August, 1715. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Bird, esq. and had issue, NATHANIEL, his heir.

JANE, married to Adam Soresby, esq. of Chesterfield, in Derbyshire, but died s. p. 18th May,

1752.

Sir Fisher d. 31st October, 1736, aged sixty-three, and was s. by his son,

JOHN THOMPSON, esq. of Haversham, in the county of Bucks, son of Maurice Thompson, esq. of Haversham, and descended from Maurice Thompson, esq. of Cheston, Herts, was created a BARONET 12th December, 1673. Sir John was a leading member of the House of Commons, and having devoted himself zealously in the promotion of the Revolution, was raised to the peerage as BARON HAVERSHAM, in 1696. He married first, Lady Frances Annesley, daughter of Arthur, first Earl of Anglesey, and widow of John Wyndham, esq. of Fellbrigge, by whom he had issue,

II. SIR MAURICE THOMPSON, Second Lord Haversham,* colonel in the guards, and officer of distinction, m. first, Elizabeth, daughter and heir of John Smith, esq. of Hertfordshire, and by her had two daughters, namely,

JOHN THORNYCROFT, esq. barrister-at-law, second brother of Edward Thornycroft, esq. of Thornycroft, d. 25th September, 1687, aged seventy-one, leaving by Dorothy, his wife, daughter of Sir John Howel, knt. a son and heir,

1. JOHN THORNICROFT, esq. of Milcombe, in the county of Oxford, who was created a BARONET 12th August, 1701.* He married Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Josiah Key, gent. of Milcombe, and had issue, JOHN, his heir, b. in 1691.

Sir John d. 8th December, 1725, and was s. by his son, II. SIR JOHN THORNICROFT, who married Terceira, daughter of Andrew Bonnell, merchant, but d. without issue, 23rd June, 1743, aged fifty-two, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED.

SIR JOHN THORNYCROFT, Soon after his creation, delivered the following petition to the lords of the Treasury, whereby he obtained a privy seal pursuant to his request.

The humble Petition of Sir John Thornicroft, of Milcomb, in the county of Oxon, Bart.

Sheweth, That his Majesty having been graciously pleased to confer the dignity of a Baronet of this Kingdom upon your Petitioner, and the heirs male of his body, by letters patent dated 12th day of August, last past; and there

Lincoln, represents in the senior branch, is one of great antiquity in that county, and has had at different times four baronetcies conferred upon it, of which one alone remains, three others having become extinct.

m. Eleanor, eldest daughter and co-heir of Wil-
liam Audley, gent, of the Hough, in the county
of Lincoln, and his line terminated with
Sir William Thorold, of Hough, knighted by
King CHARLES II. who m. Anne, daughter
of Sir Charles Dallison, knt. serjeant-at-law,
and d. s. p. in 1666.

being the sum of one thousand ninety-five pounds payable to his Majesty, in respect of that dignity,

Your Petitioner humbly prays your Lordships, that a privy seal may be granted to him, in order to his being discharged from the said sum of one thousand ninety-five pounds, as is usual in the like cases, and your Petitioner shall ever pray, &c.

+ This SIR RICHARD THOROLD, in an old parchment pedigree of the family, drawn up in or about 1642, is made to be the first who bore for his arms, "Sable, three goats salient, argent;" before Sir Richard, the coat was, "Barry of six, argent and sable, on a canton sable, a martlet or." By Jane, his wife, daughter and sole heir of Alexander Haugh, esq. of the Haugh.

WILLIAM THOROLD, obtained from his father, about the time of EDWARD IV. the lands of Harmeston, in the county of Lincoln. He was also of the city of London, where he married Margaret, daughter and heir of Mr. Baldock, citizen of London, and had two sons,

The younger son,

THOMAS THOROLD, esq. of Harmeston, married first, Rebecca, daughter of Thomas Green, of the city of London, and by her had one surviving son, CHARLES. He married secondly, Prudence, daughter of Mathew Bedell, also of London, and had Matthew and Elizabeth. The son and heir,

CHARLES THOROLD, esq. of Harmeston and the city of London, of which city he was chosen sheriff, and fined for alderman. He married first, Anne, daughter of William Wheat, esq. of Glympton, in Oxfordshire, and had one son, Thomas, who died at Smyrna, unmarried. He married secondly, Anne, daughter of Mr. George Clarke, of the city of London, and by that lady had surviving issue,

CHARLES (Sir), received the honour of knighthood 5th April, 1704, and in 1706 served the office of sheriff for London. He was likewise alderman of cordwainers ward, where he died 1st April, 1709, unm, and was buried with his father at St. Andrews Undershaft.

SAMUEL, Who s. his brother George.

The second son of the second marriage,

1. SIR GEORGE THOROLD, of Harmeston, received the honour of knighthood 10th May, 1708, and on Midsummer-day, 1710, was elected sheriff of London, having previously succeeded his brother as alderman. He was created a BARONET by Queen ANNE, 9th September, 1709, with remainder, default of male issue, to his brother, Samuel. Sir George was LORD MAYOR in the memorable year 1720. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir James Rushout, bart. of Northwick, in the county of Worcester, but died s. p. 29th October, 1722, when the baronetcy devolved, according to the limitation, upon his brother,

II. SIR SAMUEL THOROLD, who d. issueless, 1st of January, 1738, when the title became EXTINCT.

ANTHONY THOROLD, esq. of the Haugh, who married Catherine, daughter of Edward Haselwood, esq. of Maidwell, in Northamptonshire, and was s. by his

1. ROBERT THOROLD, esq. of the Haugh, who was created a BARONET 14th June, 1644. Sir Robert married first, Anne, daughter of Henry, and sister of Sir Henry Carvil, knt. of St. Mary's, in Norfolk, but by that lady had no issue. He wedded, secondly, the Honourable Katherine Roper, daughter of Christopher, Lord Teynham, and was s. by his son,

II. SIR ROBERT THOROLD, who married Catherine, daughter of Sir Henry Knollys, of Grove Place, Hants, and dying about 1695, was s. by his son,

III. SIR ROBERT THOROLD, who d. s. p. 30th Novem ber, 1706, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED.

JOHN THROCK MORTON, was lord of the said manor, about sixty years after the Conquest, A. D. 1130, which leaves little room to doubt that the family pos sessed it, at the entrance of the Normans, or long before, the etymology of the name being either British or Saxon; from this John we pass to his descendant,

JOHN THROCK MORTON, Lord of Throckmorton, in 13 EDWARD III. anno 1339, who had in marriage Agnes or Anne, daughter and heir of Sir Richard Abberbury, of Abberbury, in the county of Oxford, and was s. by his son,

THOMAS THROCK MORTON, who was of the retinue of Thomas Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, in 20 RICHARD II. was escheator of Worcestershire in 3 HENRY IV. and in the 6th of the same king, constable of Elmley Castle. He m. Agnes Besford, an heiress, and left a

son and heir, JOHN THROCKMORTON, who made a distinguished figure in the times of HENRY V. and HENRY VI. in the latter reign he bore the title of Under Treasurer of England. He made his will at London, 12th April, 23 HENRY VI. which date it bears, and bequeathed his body to be buried in the parish church of St. John the Baptist, at Fladbury, appointing that his executors should provide a marble stone, of such largeness, as might cover as well the graves of his father and mother as his own, and his wife's, in case she should determine to repose there. points Rauf Boleter, Lord England, his overseer.

By the first wife he had a son,

CHRISTOPHER THROCKMORTON, esq. who was sheriff of Gloucestershire in 5 HENRY VII. He m. a daughter of Sir John Harley, of Herefordshire, and was s. by his eldest son,

WILLIAM THROCK MORTON, Esq. sheriff of Gloucestershire in 21 HENRY VIII, m. Margaret, daughter and co-heir of Sir David Matthew, knt. of Ruyder, and thus acquired the manor of Totworth. He had three sons and three daughters, from Anthony, the second son, descended the Throckmortons, of Cheston, in Hertfordshire. The eldest son and heir,
