The Report of the Keeper of the Library contained the following:

1. Accessions.-The following is the list of the accessions to the Library in 1916:

[merged small][ocr errors][merged small]

the Irish Rebellion of 1916, made by Mr Thomas Mason, 5 Dame Street, Dublin. These include military orders and notices, and other quasiofficial documents issued by the rebels, an autograph letter from Sir Roger Casement, and the document embodying the surrender of the rebel leaders.

6. Cataloguing and Placing.-All books and pamphlets received during 1916 have been catalogued; and all the books and pamphlets have been placed, with the exception of the books reserved for exhibition in the Reading Room and those in circulation as new books.

9. War Literature.-Publications relating to the European War continue to be placed in Room Ras a subdivision of Class VIII., History and Geography. This subdivision now contains approximately 1500 books and pamphlets.

The

11. Printing Exhibition.-In October 1916 an Exhibition of Design and Workmanship in Printing was held in the Galleries of the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, under the auspices of the Design and Industries Association. Curators granted permission for the loan to the Exhibition of a number of books belonging to the Advocates' Library, consisting chiefly of examples of the work of the Kelmscott, Doves, Ashendene, and other similar modern presses. Much public interest was taken in the Exhibition. Since it closed most of the books lent by the Library have been kept on exhibition in the 30,153 Laigh Parliament House. 1,755

12. London Agency.-Towards the end of the Winter Session of 1915-16 the office of the

Library's London Agency had become seriously congested with books owing to shortage of staff and difficulties of transport. It was accordingly arranged that an assistant from the Bodleian Library and one from the University Library at Cambridge should go to London in March to assist the agent in invoicing and classifying the material which had accumulated. Special arrangements were made as to the forwarding of books to Edinburgh, and the Advocates' Library bore a proportionate share of the expense of the whole arrangement.

13. Staff-During the year two more members of the staff left for military service. Mr Alfred Nixon, who early in the war applied for direct enlistment, left on the 18th of May to join the 2/6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, and Mr John Westwood left on 28th May to join the 3rd Battalion Scottish Rifles. There is now no person of military age on the Library staff. Mr Thomas Robert Shankie, who from 1908 to November 1910 was employed as a boy assistant in the Library, was killed in action in France on 18th November 1916, aged twenty-three, while serving in the . . . . Royal Scots.

The duties of the assistants have been satisfactorily performed, and notwithstanding the depletion of the staff the routine work of the Library has been kept up to date.
