Απεκρίθη αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἄρτι πιστεύετε; Ἰδοὺ, ἔρχεται ὥρα, καὶ νῦν ἐλήλυθεν, ἵνα σκορπι θῆτε ἕκαστος εἰς τὰ ἴδια, καὶ ἐμὲ μόνον ἀφῆτε· καὶ ο εἰμὶ μόνος, ὅτι ὁ πατὴρ μετ ̓ ἐμοῦ ἐστι.

Ταῦτα λελάληκα ὑμῖν ἵνα ἐν ἐμοὶ εἰρήνην ἔχητε τῷ κόσμῳ θλίψιν ἕξετε· ἀλλὰ θαρσεῖτε, ἐγὼ νενίκηκα τ κόσμον.

Ταυτα ἐλάλησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ ἐπῇρε τοὺς ὀφθαλμο αὑτοῦ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν, καὶ εἶπε· Πάτερ, ἐλήλυθεν ἡ ὥρ δόξασόν σου τὸν υἱὸν, ἵνα καὶ ὁ υἱός σου δοξάσῃ σε

Καθὼς ἔδωκας αὐτῷ ἐξουσίαν πάσης σαρκὸς, ἵνα πο ὃ δέδωκας αὐτῷ, δώσῃ αὐτοῖς ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

Αὕτη δὲ ἐστιν ἡ αἰώνιος ζωὴ, ἵνα γινώσκωσί σε τ μόνον ἀληθινὸν Θεὸν, καὶ ὃν ἀπέστειλας Ἰησοῦν Χριστό Εγώ σε ἐδόξασα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς τὸ ἔργον ἐτελείωσα δέδωκάς μοι ἵνα ποιήσω.

Καὶ νῦν δόξασόν με σὺ, πάτερ, παρὰ σεαυτῷ τῇ δόξ ᾗ εἶχον, πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι, παρὰ σοί

Εφανέρωσά σου τὸ ὄνομα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις οὓς δέδωκα μοι ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου· σοὶ ἦσαν, καὶ ἐμοὶ αὐτοὺς δέδωκα καὶ τὸν λόγον σου τετηρήκασι.

Νῦν ἔγνωκαν ὅτι πάντα ὅσα δέδωκάς μοι, παρὰ σε ἐστιν·

Καὶ καταγγέλλουσιν ἔθη, ἃ οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἡμῖν παραδέ χεσθαι, οὐδὲ ποιεῖν, ̔Ρωμαίοις οὖσι.

Καὶ συνεπέστη ὁ ὄχλος κατ' αὐτῶν, καὶ οἱ στρατηγοὶ περιῤῥήξαντες αὐτῶν τὰ ἱμάτια, ἐκέλευον ῥαβδίζειν·

Πολλάς τε ἐπιθέντες αὐτοῖς πληγὰς, ἔβαλον εἰς φυλακὴν, παραγγείλαντες τῷ δεσμοφύλακι ἀσφαλῶς τηρεῖν αὐτούς.

Ὃς παραγγελίαν τοιαύτην εἰληφὼς, ἔβαλεν αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν ἐσωτέραν φυλακὴν, καὶ τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν ἠσφαλίσατο εἰς τὸ ξύλον.

Κατὰ δὲ τὸ μεσονύκτιον Παῦλος καὶ Σίλας προσευχό μενοι ὕμνουν τὸν Θεόν· ἐπηκροῶντο δὲ αὐτῶν οἱ δέσμιοι.

Αφνω δὲ σεισμὸς ἐγένετο μέγας, ὥστε σαλευθῆναι τὰ θεμέλια τοῦ δεσμωτηρίου· ἀνεῴχθησάν τε παραχρῆμα αἱ θύραι πᾶσαι, καὶ πάντων τὰ δεσμὰ ἀνέθη.

Εξυπνος δὲ γενόμενος ὁ δεσμοφύλαξ, καὶ ἰδὼν ἀνεῳγ μένας τὰς θύρας τῆς φυλακῆς, σπασάμενος μάχαιραν, ἔμελλεν ἑαυτὸν ἀναιρεῖν, νομίζων ἐκπεφευγέναι τοὺς δεσμίους.

Εφώνησε δὲ φωνῇ μεγάλῃ ὁ Παῦλος, λέγων· Μηδὲν πράξης σεαυτῷ κακόν· ἅπαντες γάρ ἐσμεν ἐνθάδε.

Αἰτήσας δὲ φῶτα, εἰσεπήδησε, καὶ ἔντρομος γενόμενος προσέπεσε τῷ Παύλῳ καὶ τῷ Σίλα.

Καὶ προαγαγὼν αὐτοὺς ἔξω, ἔφη· Κύριοι τί με δεῖ ποιεῖν, ἵνα σωθώ;

Οἱ δὲ εἶπον· Πίστευσον ἐπὶ τὸν Κύριον Ἰησοῦν Χριστον, καὶ σωθήσῃ σὺ καὶ ὁ οἶκός σου.

For Translation into Greek Prose :

The exercise which I commend first, is the exact use of their weapon, to guard and to strike

safely with edge or point; this will keep them healthy, nimble, strong, and well in breath; is also the likeliest means to make them grow large and tall, and to inspire them with a gallant and fearless courage, which being tempered with seasonable lectures and precepts to them of true fortitude and patience, will turn into a native and heroic valour and make them hate the cowardice of doing wrong.

N.B. For Lord Collingwood's letter (1) together with the passage of verse turned into prose (3), or for either of these, together with all the Grammatical Questions, and the Duchess of Norfolk's letter (8), really well done, the Maximum of Marks will be allotted.

1. Compose a letter from Admiral Collingwood to Lady Collingwood, making use of the following suggestions, but changing or retaining the words and sentences, and their order, as given below, as you think proper :

Admiral Lord Collingwood, writing to his wife on their wedding-day from the Mediterranean, is surprised to find Trafalgar still so much talked of in England, that being an eight months' old tale now-they must have something airy for a summer

2. What is meant by "poetic diction?" Should the language of prose and poetry be the same, or different? Distinguish between the rhythm proper for prose and for poetry.

Explain the origin of (a) irregular preterites, e. g., struck, bore, fled, flew, fell; (3) irregularities in the formation of the plural of some substantives, as sheep, oxen, men, pence; (7) the old use of "his" to mark the genitive case.

Connect the literal signification of the words "nominative," "dative," "accusative," with the uses of those cases.

3. Render the following character of Anthony Ashley Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury, into fluent prose, taking care to change for equivalents the
