INTRODUCTION

TO THE

ART OF READING.

THE advantages proposed by this Book are a saving of time in learning to read, and the acquisition of a right pronunciation of our language.

The work is intended to be a First Reading Book for Children able to say words of one syllable at sight and words of two syllables by spelling.

In the acquirement of our own language there are three stages, forming a natural sequence-Speaking it, Reading it, and Writing it-the last term being applied only to spelling it correctly when the pupil has come to write from his own thoughts or from dictation.

The word Spelling is used to express two different operations, first the uttering either the names or powers of the letters in due order with a view to suggest the pronunciation, and secondly the writing down words in the manner usual with educated people of the time, or orthographically.

Children ought not to be troubled with spelling in the latter sense when learning to read, but should first be taught to read well and not until after that be instructed how to spell, writing being employed for this purpose.

Teachers commit a great error when they attempt to combine the two processes, and their method is not well adapted for teaching either process separately.
