ROGER DE SYDENHAM, was of Sydenham and Kitsford in 15 EDWARD III. and had two sons, JOHN, the elder of whom had no male issue, but left an only daughter and heir, who conveyed the estate of Sydenham to the Caves, and from them it passed to the Percivals, ancestors of the Earls of Egmont. The younger son,

RICHARD DE SYDENHAM, settled himself at CombeSydenham, in the western part of Somersetshire. He was constituted a judge of the Common Pleas in 11 RICHARD II. He m. Joan, daughter and co-heir of Robert Delingrige, of Bromfield,† and had issue,

SIR JOHN SYDENHAM, knt. of Brimpton, who m. first, Mary, daughter and co-heir of John Buckland, esq. of Westharptree, in Somersetshire (who after his death married the Lord Grey); and secondly, Mary, daughter of Sir Thomas Guilford, knt. By the former he had, with a daughter, Frances, wife of Edward Paston, esq. of Horton, in Gloucestershire, three sons, viz.

Ralph (Sir), M.P. in 1641, followed the king to
Oxford, was after the Restoration made master
of the Charter House, and died in 1671. He
m. the widow of Sir Arthur Chichester, bart.

1. JOHN SYDENHAM, esq. of Brimpton, in the county of Somerset, was created a BARONET 28th July, 1641. Sir John m. in 1638, Anne, second daughter of Sir John Hare, of Stow Bardolph, in Norfolk, and dying in 1642, was s. by his son,

11. SIR JOHN-POSTHUMUS SYDENHAM, M.P. for the county of Somerset, temp. CHARLES II. This gentleman m. first, Elizabeth, daughter of John, Lord Pow. lett, but by her had no surviving issue. He married secondly, Lady Mary Herbert, daughter of Philip, Earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, and had by her ladyship,

III. SIR PHILIP SYDENHAM, M. P. for the county of Somerset, who d. unmarried 16th October, 1739, aged sixty-three, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED.

Several estates of the family were sold by Sir John Posthumus Sydenham, the second, and by Sir Philip, the third baronet. Brimpton, however, continued in the family, devolving on Humphrey Sydenham, esq. of Combe, who d. 12th August, 1757. It was afterwards purchased by Mr. Fane, and is now the property of the Earl of Westmoreland.

ROBERT DE SYDENHAM (son of Hugh Sydenham and Joan Polleswell), m. Alice, co-heir of Roger Helyer, lord of Choburgle, and left two sons, Robert, the father of another Robert, who d. s. p. 15 HENRY VI. and

JOHN SYDENHAM, of Indecote, who m. Agnes, coheir of Choboroughe, or Chubworth, and had two sons, both called John. The younger JoHN and his wife, Alianor, had an annuity out of the manor of Treborough, 13 EDWARD IV. The elder,

JOHN SYDENHAM, marrying the heiress of Collyn of Culmstock, in Devonshire, removed from Baddleton thither. He left three sons, EDWARD, his heir, Thomas, barrister-at-law, of the Temple, and John, rector of Brushford, in Somersetshire. The eldest SOD,

EDWARD SYDENHAM, marrying Joan, daughter and heir of Walter Combe, of Combe, removed thither. He had issue,

HUMPHREY SYDENHAM, Clerk, styled for his eloquence Silver Tongue Sydenham. He was rector of Pockington and Oldcombe, in Somersetshire, and marrying Mary, daughter of William Cox, esq. of Crookhern, in the same county, had two sons and a daughter, viz.

HUMPHREY SYDENHAM, esq. of Coombe, devisee of Sir John St. Barbe, bart. This gentleman wedded Grace, daughter of Richard Hill, esq. of the Priory, in Devonshire, and was s. by his only son,

ST. BARBE SYDENHAM, esq. of Coombe, who married Ellery, daughter of Sydenham Williams, esq. of Herringston, in Dorsetshire, and left an only child,

CATHERINE SYDENHAM, m. in 1781, Lewis-Dimoke Grosvenor Tregonwell, esq. of Anderson, in Dorsetshire, and had a son, the present (1837) ST. BARBE TREGON WELL, esq. of Anderson. The estate of Combe is now possessed by the Rev. John Sydenham.

11. SIR THOMAS SYLYAYD, of Delaware, who m. first, Frances, daughter of Sir Francis Wyatt, knt. of Bexley; and secondly, Margaret, daughter of Philip, Lord Wharton, and relict of Major Dunch, of Pusey, Berks. He died in 1692, and was s. by his son,

III. SIR THOMAS SYLYARD, of Delaware, who alienated that estate about the year 1700 to Henry Streatfeild, esq. of Chidingstone. Sir Thomas m. Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir Sandys Fortescue, of Fallapit, in the county of Devon, and dying in 1701, left a son and successor,

1. RICHARD PEERS, esq. who inherited the Mynde estate, and assumed the surname of SYMONS, was created a BARONET 23rd May, 1774; but died unm. in 1796, when the title became EXTINCT. The property devolved at Sir Richard's decease upon TноMAS RAYMOND, esq. grandson of Ann (youngest sister of Richard Symnons, the testator), by her husband, Philip Hampton, esq. of Boseley, in Gloucestershire, and son of Mary (daughter of Philip and Ann Hampton), who m. William Raymond, esq. of Thornbury,

THOMAS RAYMOND, upon succeeding to the estate in 1796, assumed the surname and arms of Symons. He m. Mary Chapman, and left issue, THOMAS-HAMPTON, Richard Harcourt, Charles, Frederick-Raymond, and Mary Ann Jane. He died in 1818, and was s. by his son,

Lineage.

EDWARD TARLETON, of Church Hill, Liverpool (descended from the old Lancashire family of Tarleton, of Aigburth, an alderman of that borough, and mayor in 1682, m. Anne, daughter of Henry Coles, an alderman also of Liverpool, and mayor in 1661, and had issue. He d. in 1690, and his grandson (it is presumed)

JOHN TARLETON, born in 1719, an alderman of Liverpool, and mayor in 1764, repurchased the old family seat of Aigburth. He m. 25th June, 1751, Jane, eldest daughter of Bannastre Parker, esq. and by her, who d. 23rd May, 1797, had issue,

1. WILLIAM, who d. 9th June, 1778. 11. THOMAS, b. 6th July, 1753, m. Mary, daughter of Lawrence Robinson, esq. of Clithero, in Lancashire.

IV. John, of Finch House, in Lancashire, b. 26th October, 1755, m. 26th October, 1790, Isabella, second daughter and co-heir of James Collingwood, esq. of Unthank, in Northumber land, and had a son,

v. Layton, b. 5th September, 1762, mayor of Liverpool in 1792, m. 25th April, 1795, Jemima, eldest daughter and co-heir of Thomas Robinson, M.D. of Liverpool, but by her (who d. 4th December, 1796, had no issue.

1. Bridget, m. 23rd October, 1781, to Edward Falkner, esq. and had issue.

The third son,

I. BANNASTRE TARLETON, esq. b. 21st August, 1754, a general officer in the army, colonel of the 21st Light Dragoons, and a grand cross of the Bath, was created a BARONET 6th November, 1818. General Tarleton represented his native town some time in parliament. He married 17th December, 1798, SusanPrecilla, natural daughter of Robert Bertie, fourth Duke of Ancaster, but died in January, 1833, without issue, when the BARONETCY EXPIRED.

both died issueless, and a daughter, Elizabeth,

Elizabeth, daughter and sole heir of George Hall, esq. of Maidstone, and by her (who wedded secondly, Percy Goring, esq. fourth son of Sir William Goring, bart. of Cockham and Burton, in the county of Sussex, and d. in 1688) had surviving issue,
