BISHOP LIGHTFOOT

ON COLOSSIANS iii. 16.

"THE leading idea of aλuós (Psalm) is a musical accompaniment, that of "uvos (hymn) praise to God on is the general word for a song, whether accompanied or not, whether of praise or on any other subject . . In the text the reference in yaλuôis is especially, though not exclusively, to the Psalms of David, which would early form part of the religious worship of the Christians; uvois would more appropriately designate hymns of praise composed by the Christians themselves on distinctly Christian themes. The third word gathers up the other two, and extends the precept to all forms of song, with the limitation, however, that they must be spiritual."
