7 If God the righteous, whom He loves, For trial doth correct; Whom He abhors, expect? 8 Snares, fire, and brimstone, on their heads Shall in one tempest show'r; revenge сир pour. 9 The righteous LORD will righteous deeds With signal favour grace; The brightness of His face. Psalm IX. The true Worshipper of God. i LORD! who shall think the place to bear Thy matchless glories fill? Ascend Thy holy hill? 2 No evil heart, no sland'rous tongue, Shall entrance there obtain ; Or seeks unlawful gain. 3 'Tis he who, if he act or speak, Sets God before his eyes ; Contemns the vile, defends the weak, And mercy ne'er denies ; A To whom the saints are truly dear; Whose promise truth defenás; And who, in all his works sincere, For grace on GoD depends. 5 This is the man who needs not fear The place Thy glories fill: And dwell on Zion's hill. Psalm XVII. Vanity of the world.-Prospect of a happy resurrection. i WHAT sinners value I resign: LORD, 'tis enough that Thou art mine : 2 This life's a dream, an empty show ; But the bright world to which I go I shall be near, 3 O glorious hour! O blest abode! and like my God! And flesh and sin no more control The sacred pleasures of the soul. 4 My flesh shall slumber in the ground, Till the last trumpet's joyful sound; Psalm XVIII. Grandeur of the Divine Interposition, 1 WHEN GOD arose my part to take, The conscious earth was struck with fear; The hills did at His presence shake, Nor could His dreadful fury bear. 2 Thick clouds of smoke dispers’d abroad, Ensigns of wrath, before Him came; Devouring fire around Him glow'd, That coals were kindled at it's flame. 3 He left the beauteous realms of light, Whilst Heav'n bow'd down it's awful head; Beneath His feet substantial night Was, like a sable carpet, spread. 4 The chariot of the King of kings, Which active troops of angels drew, On a strong tempest's rapid wings, With most amazing swiftness flew. 5 Black watry mists and clouds conspir'd With thickest shades His face to veil; But at His brightness soon retir’d, And fell in show'rs of fire and hail. 6 Through Heav'n's wide arch a thund'ring peal, God's angry voice, did loudly roar; While earth's sad face with heaps of hail, And flakes of fire, was cover'd o'er. 7 His sharpen'd arrows round He threw, Which made His scatter'd foes retreat ; Like darts His nimble lightnings flew, And quickly finish'd their defeat. 8 The deep it's secret stores disclos'd, The world's foundations naked lay, By His avenging wrath expos'd, Which fiercely rag'd that dreadful day. Psalm XVIII. God our Refuge and Deliverer. 1 JUST are Thy ways, and true Thy Word, Great Rock of my secure abode : Who is a God beside the LORD? Or where's a refuge like our God? 2 'Tis He that girds me with His might, Gives me His holy sword to wield ; And while with sin and hell I fight, Spreads His salvation for my shield. 3 He lives! (and blessed be my Rock !) The God of my salvation lives! The dark designs of Hell are broke: Sweet is the peace my FATHER gives, 4 Before the scoffers of the age, I will exalt my FATHER's name, Not tremble at their mighty rage, But meet reproach, and bear the shame. 5 To David and his royal seed Thy grace for ever shall extend; Thy love to saints, in Christ their head, Knows not a limit nor an end. Psalm XIX. Instruction derivable from creation. 1 THE spacious firmament on high, With all the blue ethereal sky, 2 Th' unwearied sun, from day to day, Doth his Creator's pow'r display; 3 Soon as the ev'ning shades prevail, The moon takes up the wondrous tale, 4. While all the stars that round her burn, And all the planets in their turn, And spread the truth from pole to pole. 5 What-though, in solemn silence, all Move round the dark terrestrial ball! 6 In reason's ear they all rejoice, And utter forth a glorious voice, |
