Hymn.

Change effected at the Resurrection.

1 THE morning flowers display their sweets,
And gay their silken leaves unfold,
As careless of the noon-tide heats,
As fearless of the evening cold.

2 Nipt by the wind's untimely blast,
Parch'd by the sun's directer ray,
The momentary glories waste,

The short-liv'd beauties die away.

3 So blooms the human face divine,
When youth it's pride of beauty shows:
Fairer than spring the colours shine,
And sweeter than the virgin-rose.

4 Or worn by slowly-rolling years,
Or broke by sickness in a day,
The fading glory disappears,

The short-liv'd beauties die away.

5 Yet these, new rising from the tomb, With lustre brighter far shall shine; Revive with ever-during bloom,

Safe from diseases and decline.

6. Let sickness blast, let death devour,
If heaven must recompense our pains!
Perish the grass, and fade the flower,
If firm the word of GOD remains!

Hymn.

Victory over Death.

FOR an overcoming faith
To cheer my dying hours,
To triumph o'er the monster Death,
And all his frightful powers!

2 Joyful, with all the strength I have,
My quivering lips should sing,
'Where is thy boasted victory, Grave?
And where the monster's sting?"

3 If sin be pardon'd I'm secure ;
Death hath no sting beside:
The law gives sin it's damning power,
But Christ my ransom died.

4 Now to the GOD of victory
Immortal thanks be paid,

Who makes us conq'rors while we die,
Through CHRIST our living head.

Hymn.

Christ's presence makes Death easy.

1 WHY should we start and fear to die? What timorous worms we mortals are! Death is the gate of endless joy,

And yet we dread to enter there.

2 The pains, the groans, and dying strife,
Fright our approaching souls away;
Still we shrink back again to life,
Fond of our prison and our clay.

3 O! if my LORD would come and meet,
My soul would stretch her wings in haste,
Fly fearless through death's iron gate,
Nor feel the terrors as she past.

4 JESUS can make a dying bed

Feel soft as downy pillows are,
While on His breast I lean my head,
And breathe my life out sweetly there.

Hymn.

Prayer to die in peace.

1 SHRINKING from the cold hand of death,
I too shall gather up my feet;
Shall soon resign this fleeting breath,
And die, my fathers' Gop to meet.

2 Number'd among Thy people, I

Expect with joy Thy face to see:
Because Thou didst for sinners die,
JESUS, in death, remember me!

I

3 O that without a ling'ring groan
may the welcome word receive!
My body with my charge lay down,
And cease at once to work and live!

Hymu.

Mourning for the Dead.

1 WHY do we mourn departing friends?

Or shake at death's alarms?

'Tis but the voice that JESUS sends To call them to His arms.

2 Are we not tending upward too,
As fast as time can move?

Nor would we wish the hours more slow
To keep us from our love.

3 Why should we tremble to convey
Their bodies to the tomb?

There the dear flesh of JESUS lay,
And left a sweet perfume.

4 The graves of all His saints He bless'd,
And soften'd ev'ry bed:
Where should the dying members rest
But with the dying Head?

Hymn.

Behold the Lord cometh.

1 WHAT were Sinai's awful wonders
To the wonders of that day?
When a voice, like many thunders,
Shall be heard from heav'n to say,
Come to judgment!

Lo, the Judge is on His way.

2 Lo, He comes! the LORD from heav'n; He who bore the cross below:

All the pow'r to Him is giv'n,
He appears in glory now:
Great His glory!

Ev'ry knee to Him shall bow.

3 See the nations all assembling

Stand before the SAVIOUR'S throne; Thousands at His presence trembling ; Hope extinguish'd, pleasure gone; Calling, seeking

For relief, and finding none.

4 But His people, they who knew Him, And on earth His Name confess'd, These the SAVIOUR welcomes to Him; These He makes supremely blest: Sweet their portion!

Their's an everlasting rest.

Hymn.

Judgment.

1 AND will the Judge descend?

2

And must the dead arise?

And not a single soul escape
His all-discerning eyes?

And from His righteous lips

Shall such a sentence sound?

And through the millions of the damn'd
Spread black despair around?

3 'Depart from me, accurs'd,
To everlasting flame,

For rebel-angels first prepar'd,
'Where mercy never came.'

How will my heart endure

The terrors of that day,

When earth and heav'n before His face Astonish'd shrink away?
